So I got a new laptop with @£*%#& Vista and installed Reason on it. The thing is that whenever I try to select ASIO driver in the preferences Reason crashes. On my old XP desktop nothing like that happened. WTF should I do?

Oh and also, I'm not really knowledged about computer things but in my new laptop the RAM usage is 1gb even tho nothing is opened and running but in my old desktop it was at the same time a lot smaller(XP). Could this be some sort of specific Vista crochet?

I don't know anything about Vista (un)fortunately, so I can't help to much there. anyway, there are several things you can try out.

1> Download some demos of different music programs like FL studio, Reaper and Cubase. If ASIO crashes in all of them, then you know it isn't Reason but something to do with Vista or your soundcard.

2> Download ASIO4All and see if that crashes Reason

3> If you have an un paid for copy of Reason, deinstall it and try the demo. If the demo also crashes, but not any of the other programs, you know it is Reason.

4> Update Vista with all the updates possible.

5> Read up on known audio issues in Vista (on computer sites as well as music sites). Google your problem in plain English and generally see if others are having the same problem.

6> Visit the Propellerhead forum and ask for help there. If you are a registered user of a legally licenced copy, you will get a very fast response.

7> Post your results of the above tests here so we can deduce where the problem lies and fix it!

8> Pray to whichever diety you believe in (or smoke a bifta) and chant some shit whilst dancing in a circle. Eventually you'll get delirious and will be able to make peace with the computer demons...!

also ensure nothing else using the audio engine is running, I was in a place t'other day using reason 3 on aiso4all drivers

opening up youtube crashes reason, and opening reason with youtube open wouldn't play back..

It is ASIO4ALL if there's any difference, but it works fine on ableton

1> Hit up the ASIO4All site and read through the manual, FAQs and forum. Again, it may be a known issue with the driver that effects Reason. Also, by learning properly how ASIO & ASIO4All function, you can configure it correctly.

2> Check the windows soundcard setting via the settings folder to see if anything is setup in a way that might cause conflict.

3> Read up about Vistas memory usage. As I mentioned, I know nothing about Vista, so I couldn't say whether 1gig of Ram being used when the system is idle is normal or not....

4> Try running Vista in XP mode, then running Reason via XP mode. I know for some older programs that can make the difference.

What soundcard are you using and have you updated the drivers for the soundcard?

Even the WDM is slower than ASIO, I'm certain your computer will be fast enough to handle making fairly complex tunes before you start to notice any lag because of the drivers. Running your music programs without anything else will keep that latency down.

If you have any bloatware or system hogs like Norton, you may wish to invest some time in finding a more performance friendly protection package? Press Ctrl-Alt-Del to bring up the task manager window and then click on the Processes tab. Order the list by clicking on Mem Usage to find the memory culprits. If the main offenders are nonessential (Skype, Epson (or other printer brand) 'help centres' webcam software etc) nuke them! You can usually set those programs behaviour from their 'options/preferences' menues. If you can, add/remove programs will help nicely

in terms of the ram, yeah vista does that, i (have to) use it at work (shite IMO) - apparently rather than waiting for you to click something, it loads stuff up in the background so its ready. However, chances of it being what you want for audio is low. itll preload word and outlook for example.

Im no expert but thats my understanding of it, my vista work machine does show about 1gb usage idle (of 2).

vistas crap, basically the same as xp but much worse performance. hardly any benefits as i see it, only the search is a bit better. all IMO.

I had problems with Reason and Vista. My solution was twofold:

1. Run Reason in XP compatability mode (right click the shortcut and look at the properties) I also think Reason is incompatible with Aero.

2. Installed XP on my computer for music, very easy, didn't even need to uninstall Vista. Now my computer has dual boot. XP because it is better for music and Vista because it's better for... erm.... ah... Look!! behind you!!

Vista really is a POS, use MS2000 or XP
