				not really weird but...
i like to sometimes gate snares and kicks
(or any element with a defined transient)
individually to control the envelope
of the hit...
attack all the way down... adjust the
hold then release to taste...
gates can be good to clean up
hits quickly... control spill and therefore
make more room in the mix for other
elements...
depends on the samples really and what
needs to be done to them..

Yeah I haven't used gated reverb but I hear it's suppose to be the shit,
your right, gating drums can make em sound punchier by emphasizing the transient
could use it on vocal samples if theres background crap you want out in the silent parts

No please dont start all that again!
Did you know the world record for the most amount of reverb on a snare is held by Whitney Houston's 'I will always love you'? Its actually illegal to play it in Indonesia

Why? Gating the Reverb on the snare can give a nice sound, Good tip imo

sidechain a gate off of something else-- let your kick/snare control a pad, etc.

maybe not the kick or snare (too simple a pattern), but especially if you have a hihat or percussion line you like, put a gate on a pad and set it up (however you do it for your combination of plug/daw) so that you're sending those hats or perc to the gate as a sidechain source...
that's it really. rhythmically, your pad will now follow the pattern of that originally instrument. at that point, you can try bouncing the pad, re-importing it, and delaying/etc it to turn it into a whole different, movement-based bit of the tune.

Can someone explain how to gate a sound at different resolutions such as a vocal or pad in ableton live? For instance in Reason you can use the matrix to send gate trigger volume of any instrument through the mixer or the instrument. From there you can change the resolution to be 1/18 or 1/16 and get that classic gated trance vocal sound
....the only way I've been able to do it in ableton is by manually adjusting the volume envelope of a sample but that is fucking worthless waste of time and doesn't change resolutions on the fly.
Thanks for clearnig this up you awesome people!

try triggering your gate with a signal running through an arpeggiator.
then on the arp. you can easily change the resolution to 1/16 or 1/8/ etc
just mute the audio so you don't hear the arp's signal and it only triggers the gate

gates are great on percussion loops. Also a rythmixc, LFO gate is great (saw this in a subfocus ? someone like that, midrangeandbass type) Future Music tutorial on youtube. Set a gate at like 1/4s or something and it will duck where your kicks and snares are at. Teh Boh.

it's an old disco trick, really-- chic was notorious for using the groove of an instrument that was in the pocket (ie, nile rogers' guitar) and using that to key an otherwise lackluster keyboard performance.

Also good for glitching things up. Use it at the end of bars for interesting fills.
Also, use it as a send effect on a bus and send varying levels of different instruments through your sidechained gate. Add delay + other cool effects. Et' voila, instant glitch!
