This is one of my favourite subjects. I would have to say the king of pranks is RePete aka the Touch Tone Terrorist, this guy is so good that he pranks people who unwittingly and/or unwillingly call him. He took out a shitload of ads for companies and bought up loads of similar numbers as legit companies like UPS, and also got a lot of calls from legit companies' customer service lines routed to him somehow (friends/fans I guess). He got a part on that show "crank yankers" a few years ago too, on the howard stern show, and had a recent low budget movie called Lost in Transit.
He used a pitch shifter and has a lot of genius characters, and would loop voices in the background to seem like he was having conversations with his other characters. I don't think i've ever heard one that didn't make me almost piss myself.
I couldn't find most of the great ones on youtube though, but you can buy them all at

my buddies pranked some kid, and eventually got his uncle to come on the phone and look outside to see where the guy was claiming to be and all that jazz. its pretty funny once it gets into it
