Quite surprised by some of the view points in here! But none moreso than someone not seeing anything wrong with blowing away a burglar. THAT is scary, and exactly why to me an armed populace is a terrible idea. Then someone suggests the idea of society collapsing as a reason to have firearms? Total non-argument for me, if you are honestly worried about the future of society, having a gun is not the first thing you would do. How about preparing some form of self sufficiency plans, or stockpiling food and water in a shelter or whatever the hell else you think you would need in this situation. To me using this as an argument for owning a gun just STINKS of a simple urge/feeling of need to own a gun that is trying to find reasons for justifying itself. It is this urge, forged from a society that tolerates it that is at the root of this gun perpetuation. However, I do think that America as a whole would never accept having their right to carry a gun taken away, and as such to me isn't an answer. This is where I have no further ideas - and am as such useless - as to how to start to remove this deep rooted firearm culture.

and that there highlights just how fucked up american culture is. there's such fetishism and obsession with objects and material goods that you're willing to kill someone to protect them. how about just chase them off ffs. if you value objects over any human life, now matter how much of a scumbag they may be, then you really need to a very long hard look at yourself

i wish i could say that you're just an ignorant dick but large swathes of american society have just the same opinion. as people have said before in this the problem with american and guns isn't anything to do with the guns themselves. guns are a symptom of the disease that is excessive levels of violence and an acceptance that it's fine to kill someone for something as petty as stealing a TV. true, in england's past people were hanged for something as mundane as stealing a loaf of bread but there were far different reasons behind it. with a lack of any kind of police force it was thought that the best way to stop crime was to deal with them so harshly that people wouldn't consider it an option. i'm sure someone will come in and say that people resort to violence because the police can't/won't help but it was as fucked up then as it is now to kill someone over something as insignificant, in the grander scheme of things, as theft

edit: before anyone jumps on that i'm by no means suggesting that all americans are the same. it's a cultural thing rather than down to inviduals and the only way for it to change is for individuals to do something about it and make it clear that that's no way to live life in a supposedly free and wonderful society

I think killing people to protect your property is fucked up, but I don't think guns have gotta be used to kill someone for that purpose. Calling the police while holding them at gunpoint, perhaps even firing a warning shot should be enough. I don't even think it's that fucked up to shoot them in the leg to immobilize them.

It's got nothing to do with 'it's my goddamn property and it's more important than your life'. It's got more to do with brigning people to justice that clearly don't respect you or your home.

Seriously, as much as you think that protecting your property with violence is fucked up, the only reason the police COULD work in that situation is the fact that they've been granted the authority to use violence and guns to bring people to justice. The only difference between the situation in the UK and USA is that in the USA, they cut out the middleman. And while there are countless of reports of people abusing that right by killing people who merely break in, without facing any charges at all (like the one guy who shot 3 teenagers executioner style simply for breaking in, without facing any jailtime), it doesn't mean that this is the only thing guns can be used for. As proven by my example, seeing as the kids already gave up when they saw the gun.

If anything has gotta change in the USA, it's the tolerance for excessive violence in the protection of their homes.
