2. shnieder, fuckit, i LOVE those "keyboard" beats in US rap. why do most of you seem to have a total embargo on all things cheap. Cheap is good sometimes. Its about context and effect. Mixdowns alone are pretty boring unless youre into the engeneering side of it. I'm into the partying side of it

I'm more into grime but dubstep has a better crowd and attitude. I like to hear both in the same set ideally. Both scenes germinated around the same time but dubstep hasn't really shown itself properly, like grime, until recently and it seems like there is potential for it to go further. It depends what happens in grime next.

Your point on the bass I can relate to though - I refuse to play productions which lack bass, with the exception of Wiley's "North London" and "16 Bar" purely down to the rudeness of the two beats!!!

no, theres a lot of brilliantly, expertly produced dubstep beats that despite marvelling at the technical excellence, i just cant get into them. i dont mind 'poor' production values (by that i mean sheer sonics) as long as the ideas and 'playing' on those tracks is good, but if the actual musical content of the beat sounds like someone who just got their keyboard for christmas that year, then i dont really wanna hear it.

i dont think you can generalise all grime as being musically shoddy though - guys like plastician, footsie (just check scars 2 - genius!), wizzbit/genius (grand theft auto etc), and the guys i mentioned before arent 'amateur' sounding. even rapid who favours the cheap presets quite often makes tracks like underground that sound proper and have a lot of intricate programming happening.

I don't really know enough about grime to comment on it - wish more people would do the same.

And cheap isn't bad as Alex said - loads of dancehall has the shitest sounds, but amazing riddims. I'd rather hear that than some expertly produced yet musically tedious drivel.

This sort of bullshits been going on since the Beatles and the Stones - you can like both you know. Plenty of cliched grime and plenty of cliched dubstep about so it's not like anyone can act that superior in the music stakes.

If you choose to create a divide between genres [not just talking dubstep or grime] and ignore some in preference of others your just shooting yrself in the foot when it comes to finding good tunes......

thats bollocks. people give their own energy and soul to their artform... its a piece of them. thats how we know who's is who's. dont mean to sound pretentious... but u can tell when something has no soul put into it.

Some grime is badly produced - but I'm no-one to name names. But some dubstep is also badly made - peeps go on about sub-bass but there tunes that have none. At least grime doesn't piss about under some pretensions to sth it ain't.

Always thought there were some absolutely wicked grime productions - bit tired of factionalism. Good music is good music.

It comes down to how each person feels it. To say that grime has no feeling or emotion is pure poo. The majority of it has a different vibe, but like Fully said, some of the beats are so dark and can probably be classed as dubstep.

Ruff Sqwad make some seriously dirty beats as well. Anyone that thinks grime has no emotion should listen to Anna, Down and the one that is burnt into my head at the moment is Clio by Rapid.
