This thread made me remind of something that a couple of people did in my school. One of my really good mates rented out Mass for about £750 with a friend of his, and asked two people in our school to play. When he told them he couldn't pay them they refused to play, and worst of all, told all their friends not to go. Their friends, like sheep, didn't go meaning that my mate didnt reach the drinks quota, which led to more money being spent. My friend forgave them but I still cant get over it, and its been about a year.

Edit2: obviosly I agree with that^^^ because I dont rely on it for my income or put anywhere near as much time or effort in as other DJs who do get paid

ah hah. Cheers for that blackdown. I understand it's rude to ask a person how much they make but i was more trying to ask the employer how much they pay. That's fairly normal ?

That figure is what you could resonably expect for a prominent local in support of an international at a medium size club here in NZ. So forgetting big name UK dj's and their superclub fees What can an equivalent type of DJ in the states or europe or japan or anywhere else expect ?

I think it must be a bit of a cultural thing, because generally people in NZ wouldn't really get that upset/offended if you asked about earnings. Granted it's not necessarily a great conversation starter, but people will either talk about or just politely decline to. I have a hard time understanding some of the responses in this thread.

in america, although I believe its rude to ask, and most do too...seems like quite a few people like to rub it in, and talk about how much money they have. Well, americans are trashy people anyways

beyond the whole rude-or-not thing, no self respecting promoter would reveal their figures (esp on a forum) as it puts artists in a difficult position

nah i'm middle class and i'll happily talk about how much money i earn to individual people, though i wouldn't feel comfortable posting it on here. that's not why i said it's rude.

i think it was rude to put up a thread on dubstepforum asking which dubstep dj got paid the most. it brings unpleasantly competitive vibes and it asks people to reveal things that would most likely make people start bitching about one another. that's different.

and i can't imagine that the people you are talking about would like you to post up here how much money they earn either.

anyway the author of this thread is clearly a bit of an attention seeker to say the least.

Dubstep is still real low-key in the D.C. area. We all know each other and do what we can to push the sound. Usually for free and often on weeknights at divebars. It's getting better though.

i get paid enough to not have to work. that's all that counts really...

i think everyone understood the aim of this thread. it's not ambiguous. talking about dj money on the internet isn't going to make you a rich man anyway, so we're back to square one on this, 10 pages later.

I don't know how things work in New Zealand or other parts of the world, but I am from the UK, no I wouldn't consider myself to be middle class or from a middle class background and I know what is common curtousy (but I cant spell it!)....and it's not asking people how much they make...OR, how much money they charge or pay to other people....that kind of information can get you either in trouble...or get u a blackeye for braggin! I am currently working in Japan and I can tell u that that question is also faux pas here too!

DJ's are hardworking people just like your local builder, a movie star or politician....however, we may not all agree on all of their wages, therefore mentioning figures on a forum is a little ridiculous...if someone did mention their wages it would no doubt start a chain of hating...are they worth that etc and DJ's trying to justify their worth.

I understand your curiousity...I too am curious as to what the pay would be like in Fabric/FWD,Ministry, etc....but it's one of those questions that should stay in your head. To be honest, unless u have mad skills, and know the right people I dont think you are gonna be playing in any of those clubs anytime soon!!!

On a lighter note, I saw a busker in Tokyo on Sunday...he told the crowd that for the past 2 years he has been traveling around the world living off his busking (jambe and digareedoo playing) and selling his live CD....if he can, they why cant u Epithet?

Maybe in your culture it would get you black eye for bragging or start a chain of hate but in mine it aint no big thing and certainly not worth resorting to violence over.

FWIW I'm not a DJ have no intention of ever being one and busking just ain't my style. I make enough doing what i do to get by. I have a standard base rate of which i try not to deviate too much from. I freelance contract my services and cut deals accordingly depending who the client is and what budget they have. I really don't give a fuck what others are getting paid but it helps to know so I dont price myself out of the market. I have no problem in asking a client from the outset what their budget is so I don't see why a club would have the same problem giving out theirs.

Agreed asking some one direct what they get paid is rude. So im not going to say.
