This Misirli Ahmet sounds great. I'm going to try to find that stuff. Just to return in kind. I was recently turned on to Burhan Ocal, another great Turkish percussionist. You might want to check his stuff. Turkey seems to have loads of great music. On a non-percussion tip, but still totally recommended, I really hope you try to find some music by the saz maestro, Erkan Ogur (pronounced oo-ur). Especially the Hic album.
Any other recommendations for percussionists though? I went to see an Iranian music night last weekend. It was The Payvar Ensemble. Six old geezers in suits. It was incredible! The drum was called tombak and there was a bit when he did a solo set. It just boggles the mind the way that he was playing, almost incomprehesible for someone like myself. I kept trying to count it out and get the patterns, but in the end I just gave up and enjoyed the performance totally absorbed.
Anyway, if you want to do some cd swaps of interesting stuff (percussive or other), you can pm me.

Ha, yeah I think I need to pay more attention to what I write. I was talking to a friend the other day about vexed, probably the same day I made that mix/tl.

It's interesting that this has been bought up exactly a year later with another DMZ looming and comparing feelings people had then with now.

I can't believe we're still waiting on Ital002 as well... that was long even in October 2005.

As much as I hate to admit it, he's still right about this. Dubstep's popularity right now is down to the focus of all the croydon lot.. but maybe that purism resulted in increased commercial appeal but less variety?

do you really not think this is still happening? i think with the popularisation of dubstep this is happening even more. perhaps in a less of a stark way but it's surely still happening.

fwd, for example, has recently seen many different tribes pass through - you just don't know who you're standing next to sometimes; where they've came from, how they got into the sound etc.

i think this is still alive. and i really really appreciate the way different people have come together to enjoy this sound.

haven't felt it quite as much recently.. but most of the ones I've been to recently have been similar lineups, and 100% dubstep for the most part. Maybe the ones with plastician, slimzee, newham generals etc were different?

but its the producer/djs choice whether they cater for the majority and their limited appreciation, or do their own thing and hope that those that know will follow
