Yeah, quite so. Arseholes can rise to the top in all spheres of life. That's no reason not to be a nice person though!

Mittens4Kittens wrote:You mentioned Mala- I loved his music before I ever knew anything about him, but after reading his interviews and hearing his inside out show for redbull music academy, his tunes are that much more special because they were made by such a radiant human being, whom I hope to have the pleasure of meeting some day. In contrast, I recently met an artist whose music I don't think I will ever be able to enjoy again because it will always remind me of the foul person behind it.
Unless you're making tunes for your own personal enjoyment and have no aspirations to gain other people's support, then absolutely it matters to be nice. Many people cannot separate the artist from the art - I can't.
Also regardless of trying to climb the ladder, is it really that much of an effort to be nice for nice's sake?

Arseholes play nice to get to the top and then go back to what they know.

I met one producer/DJ in a club...
Really wish i could say his name but that would be bang out of order.
He was in the corner, Hood up, Sun glasses on, then as i passed him to go to the toilet i saw him pull down his hood and scratch his head...
I thought 'SHIT THATS ........'
I aproached him and introduced myself and said i love your music.
He then replied 'fuck off im not in the mood to talk to fans tonight'
After that night i smashed up all his records, if i knew where he lived i would have left then on his doorstep.

Well, it's debatable. in the same manner he could just be a random stranger telling you hes not in the mood to chat tonight.
Assholes will be assholes and that has nothing to do with being a producer
I reckon being nice counts. You never know

to be fair I can understand sometimes these dudes might not want to be chatted to by strangers - everyone has nights like that - but yeah, it would certainly reflect better on them if they were at least civil about saying that.

You've got to think, though, that some nights a DJ has no choice about being in a club. They could be in the worst mood, feel ill, have heard some bad news or whatever - anyone else would go "fuck it, I'm not going out tonight", but they have to go out because it's their job to be there.
What I'm saying is you don't know the circumstances behind this incident. Yeah, it's not polite, but there could be more to it than just the person being an arsehole.

Yeah I totally agree with that. Gotta give everybody a chance. I just know that even if I am having a shit day and someone comes and talks to me I'll at least try and be polite when I tell them to fuck off.
Maybe I should be a dubstep producer/dj

same.
If I don't like the person I rationalize a dislike of their creations.
Maybe a good reason to not find out too much about producers...but then you wouldn't find out about their insights, be inspired by the "radiant personalities" or enjoy the generosity of the producers who act as part of a community.

I don't tend to have a problem separating the art from the artist tbh. I think Jim Morrison was a tnuc but I still love The Doors.
If your viewing art with the artist in mind it loses something imo. Burial, for example, despite people knowing who he is now I don't think of him at all when I hear his tunes, I just imagine whatever comes in to my head from the music.
For me, once the art's been created it's separate from the artist but the artist isn't separate from the art. The art can be experienced independently of the artist but the artist is always viewed with the art in mind.
Well, that's how I view it anyway.

I can decide what to buy and what to 'obtain', and I will only buy music from people I want to give my money to. It's my way of dishing out a tiny amount of justice. I mean, I'm not gonna tell you how to live your life, but if you want me to do something for you, be thee not a douche bag.

Yeah very true. You just see that little part of a person, you don't know the whole story. If you get to know the guy then you can judge whether he is a tnuc or not. Seems like even locally people will think you are an asshole because you didn't come off the stage and shake the hand of every mother fucker in the club. I try to but come on.

If youre a producer or DJ, I reckon it would make a huge difference just trying not to be a wanker, but for me when I listen to the music, it doesn't make any difference what the guy is like, so long as the music is good.

guaranteed- I think Kurt Cobain was kind of a loser but I love Nirvana... I think someone's personality can only ruin their music if you actually have a negative interaction with them. If you meet a producer and have a bad experience, it's hard not to be reminded of that experience whenever you hear their tunes...
