Not completely true, Swing (for me) also changes the timing of the first Beat of every bar.

maybe your program does something funky but when its written:

and this can also include a degree of variation, even though its implied as triplets and can be loose as well

Yeah fair enough. I think its because i have the infamous MPC3000 swings in logic that does some fuggery-pokery to my midi

yea i figured i would put that out there as its useful to the topic of this thread in general...
but yea the groove stuff going on lately is more complicated (on the mpc a hidden LFO was attached to timing? is this true?), I'm assuming the "swings" in logic are like ableton's groove engine.... which also has "mpc" settings as well as other things

Just knocked these up to give a bit of an example:
Straight Beat
Swung Beat
Triplets
The results are very different between swing and triplets.
@ Hurlingdervish although that is true, there is alot of different levels of swing and the point is that although a high level of swing might make the form of triplets in terms of reading sheet music, but the middle note is missed out so it isnt strictly triplets.

of course there can be different variations, 0-100 percent 100 percent being triplet based 0 being straight based.
its still triplets even if you skip a note.

these two are both triplet based. if you don't believe me, record the midi from the swung beat and put it over a triplet grid it will line up
The full swing and the triplets match up on the same grid with each other but because the swing restarts on the beat it doesn't seem like it

Swing on an MPC is different than Swing on other sequencers.
It shifts notes both forward and backward, most just shift one direction.

so i have heard. is it the LFO tied to note placement internally? thats what i heard....
but the thing is, most swing on sequencers is a relative concept because they are applying humanizing alterations. Its good to have the basic understanding of where the notes hit before its humanized, and all groovy like....maaaaan

I downloaded them to be put into logic. They are the exact midi swings extracted from the mpc via midi

This thread is confusing the fuck out of me now.
Do triplets only exist in 3/4 time? Is a series of three hats in a row with swing straight then?
I was trying to get a pic up, but lost patience. This is supposed to represent a step sequencer, and how I often do my hats. Ive been writing alot on an old mc307 and I dont have the luxury of being able to do just the hats in 3/4. So I get a triplet feel by doing it this way in 4/4 with shuffle.
Are these triplets or straight?

a triplet is 3 notes in the space of 2, dog
2 can be sixteenths, eighths, etc

Is it still called triplets when they are half this speed? you don't need to unquantise to do it, and lots of tracks use them. I pretty much use them in every track.

triplets or a bit of shuffle is my way, feels more natural otherwise midi no quantization like a real drummer
