You don't hear the DJs who actually get booked complaining do you?
Beat matching isn't very hard and on it's own is only good enough to make you 'competent' on the decks. People who get upset that people are 'cheating' by using a sync button need to reevaluate their priorities imo

Yeah, I know "Real" DJ's that organise their vinyl in BPM order so it's easier to mix. (No Joke.)
To me, as someone that doesn't DJ often, I'd say that was cheating...
I'm able to use decks, and i've practiced on them enough, but I personally feel the digital DJs have the edge if they know what they're doing.
I've used Albeton and vDJ for mixing, and if you're creative with it, they're amazing pieces of kit - not just for syncing music, but I've used it to create loops live in the mix as a segue to another drop so the crowd think they're getting one thing, before they get hit with something completely different.
If you're clever enough, you can open the programmes twice, and guess what - four decks on the go... (it's not impossible, but it's fucking difficult - tried it with 6 decks and lost track of what I was doing, so wouldn't advise it,) and again, if you can use them right, you get a great sound.
But, in all this talk, you miss the point of the DJ in the first place... to keep the party going. After a few drinks and oogling some of the ladyfolk for a few, I just wanna have a good time and rave it up - as long as the selection is good, (and that usually means the selection that keeps the ladyfolk on the dancefloor,) it's all good.

yea but you're talking to the beardstrokers and trainspotters at the club when it comes to this who lurk on the outer edge of the dancefloor wishing they could dance or chat up the ladies and scatter like cockroaches when they see people having a good time

agreed.
I am also part of the local free party rave scene, where 100% of the DJ's use vinyl, its brilliant... but a lot of them are so buzzed/k'd up they don't bother EQing songs when mixing in, which frankly, isnt good mixing and often sound a shambles.
Beatmatching isnt everything! To be a good DJ you need good tune selection, good structure mixing, good contacts, and good use of effects can really help build the atmosphere... plus lots of other things! seriouz.
I mix using traktor scratch (with a controller), in conjunction with two vinyl decks. It works a treat with the versatility of laptop DJing and the pure beauty of flipping the next vinyl onto the deck and cuing up physically.
Of course when mixing laptop deck into vinyl deck or when mixing B2B, I have to beatmatch just like I would normally...
I also often have to use CD decks when playing out, may as well embrace the new technology as 1210's arnt gunna be found in every club for long, and a lot of raver DJs are pretty stuck in the 90's!
safe
Quit ya whinin' you vinyl obsessives.

dont forget here guys that there is such a thing as live pa still. if you are a producer imo you should be doing live pa. back in the day i was a big ill factor fan because the guy was making great tracks and doing that shit live.
im not saying that there arent people out there that are able to rock out on ableton and really keep busy but it still takes no skill. it really dosent take any knowledge about music theory or anything.
if you listen to the soundcloud set that i posted earlier in this thread that guy uses serato. hes still being a dj even though he uses pads. like i said, you are able to do all that shit that you do in ableton but it requires the skills of a dj because there is no program to drop everything in time and beat already matched. you would have to match the beats and hit the pads in perfect timing, can you do that? if you cant stop calling yourself a dj, dont worry though its not like all of us can be good at it. its a skill that you have to work on.
on a sidenote if i was to follow a turntablist around i would go to every kentaro show personally. ive never seen anyone like that besides qbert and i think that kentaro may be better. if you dont know educate yourself on youtube before you spout off on the topic.

I see the point, but I still think it's complete bullshit. Any of the good DJ's on here could easily smoke a blunt, talk to some girl, go buy drinks and DJ all with their eyes closed if you give them a sync button. It doesn't take a full 2 minutes (roughly) to decide which the next song is going to be and then use the computer to cue it up. We can all do that in 15 seconds flat. For me, beatmatching gets everything grooving, which is why I swapped out my CDJs for vinyls. I could literally just put on a set list and do the whole thing without even paying attention if you let the computer do it for you. I just find it a slap in the face for DJ's who spend years learning how to get everything right, and then some drunk chav walks up and goes, yo check dis bruv, aint even got to be using no headphones. Fuck that. It's like if a drummer was quantizing all his beats on the spot. What's the difference between him and a kid who's fucked around on it for 2 hours?

im a digital dj, not because im lazy but because i just cant afford vinyl, i still do all my beatmatching manually and still give it 110% everytime i play and i still drop whatever tunes i can on vinyl its just purely a money sense in somee peoples cases, so dont strike us all down with the same stone
