Seems to me older dubstep was more sub bass based, while newer definetly had more mids and the trend seems to be that it's going higher all the time.
IMO it might have to do with people making it to sound good on all systems including ipods and shitty little speakers. Maybe it was just breaking the mold of only using lows? At the end of the day I like my bass low or mid, if it's good, it's good.

absolutely nothing at all:
and please note that this one isn't 'chill' at all.

Doctor p - sweet shop

I'm the other way round. I've got into the habbit of just having sub and using other sounds to roll along with the bass. Coming from a reggae background i much prefer groove over hype noises.

mid range isn't a cop out, you can still have a lot of musicality.

I reckon it is good to have some sort of mid range harmonics in there so that it is listenable on all mediums, for example people who are listening to your tunes on laptop speakers (which will be the majority) will not be able to hear your bassline if it is solely sub frequencies...
When producing you have got to think about the accessibility of your music and taking the time to listen to your tracks on different sound systems, in the car, on shitty laptop speakers, your track should sound as phat on trebly crap speakers as it does on a huge rig.. not all of your listeners are going to have top spec monitors or subwoofers, so that is definitely something to bare in mind when producing tracks.

I don't think its right to say that about a genre like dubstep which came about as sound system music. Its main feature is heavy bass. It was never meant for laptop speakers!

Bollocks mate, I have a pair of £17 headphones and they go down to 40hz - now they're not great for producing on but they sound GREAT for just listening to music - so saying "for the laptop crowd" is bollocks, infact, even my misses who doesn't care about the how music sounds (as in, a big system doesn't impress her) uses headphones instead of laptop speakers as they're even to bad for her to listen on...
If you can afford X amount of hundreads on a laptop, a pair of headphones won't bust the bank, plus its not even about monitors or a sub when you're talking about LISTENING, infact I mix and make most of my music for the gang sitting at home with headphones on. If that closes my potential market by 90% I couldn't care less cause at least my audience is actually experiencing my track to its fullest content!
Sounds like people are trying to cash in.

Most of my tracks are mainly sub.
I would try and add some harmonics to make the sub more present, but the idea of adding midrange to make it audiable on laptop speakers etc is just lame imo. It's sub music, designed for good speakers... I guess maybe this is a discussion about the mainstreaming of dubstep? Not that if you have mid range then you are nessessarily mainstream, but that if people are delibrately making tracks with lots of mid range to have wider appeal then that is a "mainstreaming" (or whatever you want to call it).

Some people still think ALL dubstep is chill music. I don't agree with that but at the same time, what's wrong with chillin out to music? I could chill and listen to some Metallica getmi. Anyway I thought the point of dubstep was that we have listened to the fast repetitive beats for so long we really don't need that anymore to get down. The point just goes zinging over peoples heads, even this scene.

what i really like & am currently trying to make is sub, yet the occassional growl coming through gives darker vibes

if I had a good tune with just a sub and I liked it I wouldn't add mids to make it sound good on any sound system, I'd add it because it makes it sound better otherwise I'd just leave it out

Funny thing is, isint dubstep is known for not following rules, yet when it makes a change it seems like it breaks it's own "rules".
Personally hearing dubstep on a system that makes you feel your bass is definitely the way it was meant to be heard...or felt or whatever. I guess since it is gaining mainstream popularity some mainstream production methods will be applied.
