use all breaks! people use the amen break because it has a very distinctive sound and roll to it. and then other ones because they don't

Absolutely. A young feller starting out could probably learn a lot from spending a year doing nothing but Amen cuts. Once you earn your chops on that, you can make any break your bitch.

The original amen has a magical soul that cannot be reproduced, it's an example of the musicians personality filtering through to the recording plus it is more than just the drum hits that make it what it is, it's also the space captured and that relationship between the space and the groove. Too pretentious? :D

I swear - and bear in mind I was using the oldskool Hammerhead beat app - that after a year or so of practically nothing but Amen choppage, my beats went to a whole 'nother level.
