I feel pity for those persons who make so much ado about the transitoriness of all things and lose themselves in the contemplation of earthly vanity. Why, we are here for the very purpose of making the transitory imperishable, and this can be done only if we know how to appreciate both conditions.
-goethe
I’m a native New Yorker, as you can probably tell. I think all music comes from a time and place. The Beatles come from ‘60s England, Kurt Weill comes from Weimar Republic in Germany. Bach comes from Eastern Germany. I come from New York and the West Coast in the 1960s and ‘70s. The composers we know and love give honest expression to that. Not by trying to write the great American piece, but just by being who you are. And if you’re honest about who you are, then that music will bear evidence to the honesty of your situation, no matter what it is. What you guys are doing right now is evidence of what’s going on in the world. How well you do it will determine how long and how much interest there is in it. Musical quality doesn’t change. There was this story about George Gershwin meeting Alban Berg, who was a friend of Schoenberg’s. Gershwin was a bit nervous and Berg could tell that, so he said: “Mr Gershwin, music is music.” That’s the kind of truth that stays the case.

reich-at-rbma is pure treasure; steve reich is in the unique position of being a significant figure in the history of music who probably put out his best work decades ago and is still able to say relevent things to kids making music on their computers

I am finding a way to both maintain more or less the original intention of the tracks while adding some flexibility and interactivity to make it more fun. And as for environments, I obviously prefer silent ones, that way people can appreciate the more subtle elements of the music. They are happy and I am happy. There’s no sense in playing in club or noisier environments, unless that’s the initial intention or it is viewed as a necessary component.

DJ Shadow -
"I’m keen to not dilute dubstep with my own very distant perception of it. Because I know it has a very fervent, passionate, hardcore base to it. If I didn’t grow up in this country, attending those clubs ten years ago I don’t feel qualified to critique it. I enjoy it and I listen to a fair share of it it but I’m not an expert."
