Make sounds all the time when im stoned. But for drums ya coffee and cigarettes. I try to get all the technical shit out of the way then will improvise and write a bassline after a bowl. And then repeat this pattern and do what rusko does and light up when im finished. Gives you a different perception of the sounds in my opinion.

Also, try smoking a sativa strain or headies, its way better than indica as far as producing goes.

been doing something like this for the past couple days. dont smoke, but have been smoking like a chief since iv been in California.I get a really good herb, roast it, relax & think and come up with some unique, or interesting drum loops & basslines. When I get back home I want to really sit down at work with these things.

I just do it. There's no trick about it, sometimes the best things can happen by accident. Although, I do make sure to get a food and beverage run out of the way before starting. That's just about it....gather your supplies and just do it.

edit: I've been producing for a long time now too so I have several methods for starting a track that ensure success. Smoking only helps me come up with shit that I would otherwise have written off.

I have no issue producing stoned.
I`m ** now so I`ve been smoking close on 18 years.
I went through the fiddle until you drop stage.
Just never got anything done.
Now I find the ideas flow regardless.

It does however allow me to create repetitive, hypnotic atmospheres.
Which is up my street.

I think it`s all about being comfortable with your tools at hand.
Know what you want when you want it.

Those 7 layers of arpeggiated ambience that dance around each other.
Those are the ones that get me everytime.
I try to listen to them in short gaps rather than letting them play for extended periods.
They get my staring at space.
I`m totally intrigued by the ghost in the machine.
I tend to listen for it all the time.
Too much sometimes.

By the Ghost in the machine, I am referring to the evolving, unexpected nature of computer generated soundscapes.
Load up Omnisphere, find a good 6-8 track multi.
Push a button and listen for hours.
Or create a soundscape with alternating layers that converge and flow through each other.
As the sounds merge, new sounds appear.
I tend to listen for these sounds too much.
So I mute the suckers and carry on working.

Just know what could possibly divert your attention and work from there.

You realize saliva and indica are two different strains of weed Sativa=your music sounding like its the music of the gods from another planet (head high) indica= your body melting in your chair (body high)

Smoking weed and producing is pretty much doable for me, I don't smoke when doing mixdown and mastering.

Haha yes Rando, I realize this (though I'm assuming you meant saTiva and indica ...) I was asking why you'd smoke anything other than a Sativa. I personally don't give a fuck about a body high. All about the head for me.

I think it just prolongs the process...

It doesn't give you magical powers so everything fun and interesting you make when blazed was already in your mind somewhere just you have the patience to try it out and you don't reject an idea as quickly...

But to do that then wait a whole day to make sure what you made was actually good? It just sounds a bit silly, its like playing the lottery every day - hoping the next day you win the jackpot.

If you must smoke while producing - some sort of fruity, sweet drink (fruit tea is good) and a banana or something will help.. Give yourself some natural energy's. Coffee will just bug you out after an hour and make you worse off than you was before.

Lovely put. Any thoughts on mixing stoned anyone? Would love to every time but a. i don't play the kinds of venues with talent rooms where i could do this and b. don't think the venues themselves would be too keen on me lighting one up out back (although I haven't asked.) Tried smoking right before I left for the club a few times but would just come down 20 minutes into the set. any pointers?

As in DJing mixing? All the people I DJ with mix flawlessly sober or high - the mixing styles a bit different (usually more blending and subtle when they've had a smoke).

I don't think smoking or drinking affects a DJ's ability (I for one can still mix good enough to play out even if I am boarderline passing out from drinking) if they're used to being intoxicated when doing it.. You just grow used to it.

Oh yeah, I don't think it affects performance too much. I meant tips on getting in a smoke right before you go on so you can actually be stoned whilst DJing.

I typically dont produce stoned. However, when I do, I find that the best time to do it is during the creative process. Sometimes I would even get a bit stoned during the final mixdown stage as well. But thats just me...

this is what i do every fucking time. iv only been producing for less than a year. well iv had reason for a year but i took a long break in the middle. anyways, im still new to producing and when i hit my daw while cooked i usually come up with a little something that seems pretty good. then litterally like you said..fiddle till i drop. i usually come to and realize iv been tweaking knobs endlessly for 2 hours not getting anywhere. my eyes are strained to shit and i just get off my chair and roll into bed at that point.
