and PLEASE experiment with rhythms. im sure there's more rhythmical possibilities in that style than just hte standard reggaeton meets house ting.

I intend to make a sticky to outline some of the key questions people ask so let's brainstorm a list of defining elements in the genre and attack them.

What is moombahton? “Moombahton is mid-tempo global bass music for the universe. It’s a sonic marriage of electronic dance music (house, techno, and dubstep) with latin/island music (reggeaton, cumbia, and dancehall) that flows at a pace of about 108 beats per minute. Originally, moombahton started by Dave Nada slowing down tropical and dutch house records and re-edited them to sound like reggaeton’s weird little cousin. Because the tempo nears that of reggaeton, Nada created the neologism “Moombahton” by combining the title of the track “Moombah” by DJ Chuckie & Silva Cuomo and the “ton” ending of the word “reggaeton” and applied it to the new genre. Moombahton continues to grow worldwide as producers and DJ’s push the music in exciting new ways.” – Dave Nada

So the basics:
Tempo: Mid tempo - 108 bpm.
Sounds: House, techno, dubstep with latin/island rhythms
Lots of squelchy squeely saturated higher pitched sounds seem to be prevelent to create axious hype in the mid tempo groove. Highly syncopated rhythms lie underneath giving an exotic flair. I think we will see the sound develop in a few directions given that the inspired forward thinking producers will start getting bored and will want to chew on a new format and bring their own background to it. I'm seeing people bring mellow vibes, way more of a disco sound, as well as something clearly straight outta bass culture coming into play. I've never really been into straight beat genres but this stuff is fun and people are getting creative.

you know, reading that description makes it look like that Dave Nada tries to force-start a genre where he is a central figure. People try to do this all the time ("drumstep" anyone?) but I don't think it actually works that way. idk, I could be wrong.

you're 100% right.

also a genre that does not even properly exist yet (there's no real scene, there's a compilations but no 12" release, there's 1000s of remixes but no one plays them) but already has a formula to describe how it's done = doomed from the start.
i mean i like the idea but it's way too early to declare a genre and nail it down like this.

also i love how it's got more subgenres than artists.

all it does is just go boom, boom boom boom -boom- -boom-, repeat

hell no thats not what i mean at all, i'd happily slap anyone who tells me moombahton is dubstep. but honestly why cant people just do their thing and wait until a scene or movement of any form has appeared before giving it a new name they made up? everyone's just chasing the hype and that sucks because that means not even a year after a style has first surfaced everyone's jumping the bandwagon.
no one made up a new genre name when ramadanman's work them and addison groove's footcrab came out.
no one made up a new genre name when scuba and the hotflush crew mixed techno with dubstep/garage rhythms.
no one made up a new genre name when people started doing hiphop influenced but highly experimental electronic music back in the day.

i dunno whats going on in here anymore... but exploring different tempos with latin influences is just awesome, imo. I can't wait to give it a shot myself, i've always liked dancehall riddims .. and y'all know i like to MC, but i don't think i have the voice for this style.. its still exciting to see different styles interact and melt together in a boiling pot.

1. Skrillex himself said that 'Reptile' was his bash at moombahton (Don't take this as me saying that cause he says it is moombahton that it is)

2. Its the same tempo as standard moombahton (around 108 bpm)

3. Moombahton isn't just defined by the kick and snare placement.

IDK, but I'm in the DC area, know most of the guys that are playing with this a lot, been to a few of the bigger parties (400~500 people), and yeah, the kids here love this stuff.
