I don't think I have ever made a tune without either ozone or maximus on the master. I don't do it to fix the mixdown, I only apply it when I am happy with my mix.
The way I see it is if I don't get my tunes mastered there's nothing wrong with it.

I tried the demo of Ozone. fairly good plugin, but I didn't like it...don't know why, exactly.
I like Maximus as a dynamics shaper/limiter/compressor. It's somewhat weighty on the CPU, though, but it's still pretty decent.

I don't like the interface, it's just... Not for me, I guess. I've used it a couple of times, but maximus is just the better one for me.

Haha, just a bit too much green in that interface IMO. But the main problem for me was the amount of signal delay it caused.

I like ozone's harmonic exciting, just put a small amount of tape exciting on a self master and that's it. It doesn't make anything sound better, I just like the texture I get from it.
ps: I just got out from a final and I'm dead tired, excuse me for my english

I love ozone for getting quick-masters. I never just throw it on the master bus, though, I just work on a mixdown track peaking at -6 to -4 db's. The thing that sold me was it's mid/side capabilities, great for tightening up the low end by having a high pass on just the side channel, putting a slight master reverb on the sides (something that ca do more harm than good if used when you don't need it), adding multiband saturation for the different bands on both m/s, and more. If I'm exporting a track I'll limit it to -0.1 and dither to 16 bit with the default setting, then export with normalize enabled (do this because if you maximize to zero, the dithering will tip it into the reds). I don't mess around with the eq, because I figure any problems with eq you should have fixed in the mixdown stage, and the track should sound good to your ears at this point. Leave post mixing eq to the pros, they're there to make subtle changes that you didn't/don't notice.
And my rule of thumb is that a good mixdown is more important than mastering. Mixing and eqing a track is essential, so just work on that. Oh, and if it's a track that you are just playing out or showing friends, there's no point in getting a track mastered by someone else, just limit it. I've certainly gotten tracks mastered, then listened to them a month or so later and wondered what the hell I was thinking.

Ozone is good if you've never experienced what a mastering suite does.
But once you have an idea how it should sound, discard Ozone and do it yourself.

I can't say better.
Soundgoodizer or Maximus are just toys.

Yeah, the delay is one of the reasons I don't use it much. :/

DAWs compensate latency if any. I don't know how it can be an issue for mastering.

I dont necessarily use it for mastering only, lots of cool things you can use it for.

back when i didn't have monitors i used to throw vintage warmer on my master like mad
it's bad practice, but if it gets results who's to question it
