No extreme cutting? Why not? I roll off half the spectrum on most of my percussion...

Ya I think it's situational. Depending on what the sound is, and what it's accomplishing in your mix. This is why it's good to learn practical applications and let your intuition run its course from there.

If you are referring to my post, that's not what I said if you actually read it. I didn't say don't use extreme cuts ever. I agree, it's fine for something like you suggest. I feel like a lot of people EQ the life out of things so I was merely suggesting often a gentle hand is the way to go.

And that when you do EQ, with many things gentle slopes, shallow notches and wide bandpass worth better than extreme cutting. Especially on organic samples (real instruments.
But really it's about picking/designing sounds so you don't even need EQ.
That's if you're doing it at a mix stage, but super precise surgical EQ is sometimes necessary when preparing certain samples. One of the kicks in NoiseFactory Complextro Tools 2 I had to EQ a certain high freq way down. (I am not a rep for NoiseFactory even though I keep dropping this sample pack name here lol)

I agree. I don't know why you all think I'm promoting never do sharp cuts. Also, that cluster fuck of an OP sounds like he is talking about "the mix stage". Also, IMO, if a sample has problems that need extreme EQing before it even gets inside the context of an entire mix...pick a different sample. And don't worry, I probably won't be buying a sample pack whose samples need that kind of work done on them, lol.

It was only one kick and it's actually a really good sample pack

i'd say extreme cuts are fine, extreme boosts is what you have to be careful with. It won't sound weird if a certain frequency band is gone, it will sound weird when a frequency band is much louder than others. That's what the entire "only cut, don't boost" philosophy comes from, but boosting is fine if you be careful with it.

Come now. That's just silly. Of course extreme cuts can sound bad/funny/strange. Lets all get our heads screwed on here...though it's true in the context of a mix cuts are probably less noticeable as long as there is something there to make up for what you cut.

I'm just going to answer to your title since I can't seem to figure out what you're saying in the post...if there was a "secret" to EQing, it would be to start out with good sounds in the first place. As the famous saying goes, you can't polish a turd.

Yeah that's what i meant. Take something away, and well, it's just not there. Add something on top and it'll be weird.
Take away the pepperoni from a pizza and it's still a pizza. Cover the damn thing in pepperoni entirely and it'll be a really weird thing you'd expect to be on Epic Meal Time.

Eqing is just working out where the sounds should be sub bass below 100h so cut the eq above that on the sub channel
Each drum: kick, snare, hats ect ect will have there own space in the eq spectrum which can only be descided by you
Each track will also have its own set of values with different snares needing to be brighter han the last
If your track goes down hill quickly when eqing your either eqing the whole track rather than the parts or heres to much low end (bass) try cuttin everything below 30-40h but its certainly an art otherwise if its the one or you have several good tracks splash a little cash and have it done by a pro there are loads around hope this is helpful and it took me a while too
Also learn about muddy mixes and how to fix them another common eqing problem there are many youtube videos on eqing and mastering

OP: do you mean eqing during a mix/set?
-OR-
Eqing elements properly while doing a mixdown?
but for reals the post you made is pretty epic... not in a good way.

When I am EQ'ing a sound I will sweep the frequencies with a sharp notch until I find any ugly frequencies. I then softly cut those frequencies. I never boost anything with the EQ mainly because I am using Ableton's stock EQ. It is good but I don't like what it does when I boost frequencies with it. Check this site out.

I love how this
UTTER DISGRACE of a thread actually turned in to a somewhat constructive conversation.
