Why pitch it in melodyne? If that's your way... Fine by me, but you can pitch in ableton too, you know!
Just use something like voxengo span to find the root note from your sample

I'm all about those detuned sine waves with reverb and delay on them and a long attack. Floaty pads. :D

Why pitch it in melodyne?
I just trust it a bit more as it's dedicated to that and has a few algorythms. It can also do a wave to midi which is quite useful sometimes.

Yeah. Add a lot of reverb, reverse reverb really makes the vocal sound like pads, and with some pitching and eq they can sit on top of pads and sound really atmospheric.

oddly enough i have yet to put a pad type sound into a sampler, probably about time i did that lol

You'll probally want to loop the middle of the pad sound. Then you can adjust the ADSR envolopes.

Yes I absolutely love me some nice detuned analog sounding pads, but like someone else said, with some grit to them. I also have a thing for pads that have long attacks and releases.
