It's not that I don't want to buy/DJ vinyl or that I only want to buy it in order to sell it in a few years. I would love to start buying and DJing vinyl are you kidding me, but clearly it's pretty expensive - about $10 per song - and I'd feel a lot better about putting some money down to start a collection if I knew I was gonna at least get my money back in a few years because once I leave college the vinyl will be literally nothing more than a collection because I won't own the stanton's, unless I buy my own obviously.

And I'm not a rich fuck so I'd rather get some advice before I throw down money at $10 per song.

Also it would be a lot easier to convince my mom to spot me some money if I could tell her I would give it back to her plus maybe more in a few years. :6:

Also I figured this thread could be used for general chatter about vinyl collections and how much their worth, cause that's kinda fun to talk about... and stuff.

You probably won't make money. But you will have a tangible product with memories attached that you can continue to play for years to come. Plus girls will think you're like, omg, so underground.

Also: vinylssssssss

so buy a shit cheap turntable for your own enjoyment and don't think about them with selling in your mind,
i'd admit i have bought a couple that i wasn't really feeling with it in my mind that they would resale for more but found that i still didn't give a shit about the tune once i owned it so it was just pointless

Yeah I agree with this statement a lot, you feel like that at the mo cos you don't have a collection. when you start collecting you get attached. My collection is worth about £7k, according to discogs, but fuck knows how much I've spent on it. I don't want to know, not because I'd regret it, but because it's not about the money to me. i am happy i have my records.

how the fuck does discogs make money? Do they take a percentage of every sale? Cause it seems like they've got a fuckload of server space...

surprised no one mentioned the best perk of having a massive vinyl collection: the terror in the eyes of your friends when you mention you will need help to move house (again for the 4th time in 5 years) :h:

Yep, they take 6% iirc, up to a certain value.

Unlikely, you'll be capable by then and starting to build a proper collection you're proud of, it'd be hard to throw that away after 2 years imo. Depends how addicted you get to buying and how attached you get to your collection lol.
dubunked wrote:I see so many ridiculous prices on discogs, but do most records actually sell at good enough prices to actually make your money back and/or make a profit a few years down the road?
If you're really selective in what you buy yeah you can make your money back/profit. Obviously assuming you take good care of them. However you need to pay attention to the sold information and not the prices people have them up for.
dubunked wrote:I'm thinking I should only go for new releases, cause old records that I would love to spin like DMZ007 or MEDI003 are probably expensive as fuck.
You'd be surprised.. you can pick up some really cheap decent tunes second hand. With some new plates reaching near £10 for a 12" it might be worth looking at bulk buying some older really cheap tunes first. Plenty of Tempa releases go quite cheap.

dubunked wrote:So if I budget myself like $100 to get a small vinyl library going, that way I would get the most tunes for my money. The average new record is like 8 GBP from what I've seen. That's like $12. Shipping is probably like $8 so that's approximately an even $20 per record. But correct me if you think any of that is wrong.
Same as above really, $20 sounds a lot for 1 record.. check out some second hand ones on discogs from US sellers, its definitely worth taking a look, you'll be surprised. Go into record shops as well, paying more than the record for shipping is a lot.. so I'd use that as a last resort if I were you.

Just prepare yourself to be skint. You may not be but its better to be prepared than not.

I gave away nearly all of my records to various Ninjas before I moved to Spain. Kay took some, Clifford took a chunk as well.

Good music doesn't stop being good music just because I no longer own it.

And as hardly any of my collection could be considered 'good' in the first place..

Yeah thats moving to Spain.. sometimes life > records. Dubunked said he'd have no use for them after graduating unless he brought turntables. TBH I'd be surprised if you make it to 2 years before buying turntables.

If you buy records for 2 years then your options are either sell your whole collection or buy turntables I think most people would go the turntables route. Obviously depends on your situation after graduation, you might end up in a similar boat as Wub and need to sell them anyway.
