I absolutely effin hate London. Everytime I play there I get a fine of some sort, or the car gets broken into, or some gnarley idiot has a go at me...nah, eff that. Bristol for me.

fair enough, those billboards are shitty, ignore them though, thats not how normal people roll here, thats just how ken rolls - londoncentric

I'm biased of course, having moved to Bris about 8-9 years ago and I have to say I love it here. Of course it's not as busy/bustling as London - there's only about 500k people living here as opposed to 12m in London - but it's cosmopolitan enough to satisfy most peeps.

One of the nicest things in general is the amount of younger people living in central Bristol - there are nearly 50k students between the 2 universities, so there's a lot of culture provided by and for 20-30 year olds.

Music-wise, of course we don't have FWD every Friday, but there's a dubstep nite on most weeks if you want to go to something, and there's a lot of other stuff besides, so much in fact that I sometimes get depressed that I'm missing out on so much due to time restrictions. I'm still continually surprised by the number of people that move here solely for the music scene, but I can see why they would.

The nicest thing about Bristol for me is actually the size of the place - it's small enough that everyone knows each other, at least vaguely. By that I mean that I know people playing/promoting techno, house, DnB, dubstep, hiphop, hardcore breaks etc etc and much much more, from artists to graffers to journalists to club owners to the Don't Panic crew and beyond. There's a genuine community vibe amongst the underground community, which engenders both a mutual respect and a spirit of cooperation - promoters often discuss plans and work to avoid clashes.



On the flipside, arguably there is nowhere more 'happening' in the world than London, you just have to avoid feeling overwhelmed sometimes - think of it like a collection of small villages/towns instead of one big sprawling mess. Most Londoners tend to stick to their little bit in the main, venturing further afield less often. Travel can be a fucking nightmare but ain't that hard if you use your noodle. I'm often surprised at how easy it can be if you choose to walk/bike places instead of getting sucked into using the Tube all the time - unless you're going from one side to the other (or you're lazy) then it ain't actually that far.

London is of course way more expensive too - for a room in a nice shared house in a decent part of town will prob cost you max £350ish plus bills etc, whereas I'd expect it be at least £600+ in London, and then there's the cost of living....granted salaries are higher too, but I can't seem to step out of the door in London without £20 just evaporating out of my wallet.


If you fancy coming down to check out Bristol for a bit I'm sure there's a few peeps on here that could show you about, myself included. You could crash at a youth hostel or summat for a few days and see what you think.

They used to run, then they stopped cos of too many townie pissheads getting aggro, now I'm not sure. Noone really uses them tbh - unless you live in the arse-end of town, you can walk pretty much everywhere. And if you're too lazy/pissed then a cab is never ever more than a tenner, usually much less.

Havent visited Bristol before, i imagine it as some sort of dance music mecca, and a close knit underground scene..

i live in a london suburb, and i do NOT reccomend moving to London, however what i will say is that the more central the better (imo), as my area is the pits...

lol, if that's your thing there's good weed in Bristol, some might say too good.


anyway, it's funny, I've always envisaged myself moving to London for a stint at some stage - at the end of the day, if you want to make some serious money, or get a job in a creative area like music/media or whatever, London is the only place where you have a realistic chance of doing so.


That said, I don't fancy moving there any time soon unless a dream job falls in my lap. The only city I'd actually like to live other than Bristol would be Edinburgh.

Safe Thinking, I'm pretty much looking for that kind of community vibe in a city, that's what I liked about Nottingham really except I think Bristol will be slightly better in terms of travelling home/to London and will have a bit more going on.

Saw it last night on this program called Footballs Hardest Away Games. It had some barnsley hooligans drinking special brew on the train down and then there were a few shots of it before the hooligans went to a strip club. It looks nice... especially the strippers right tit

Bristol man, with a smaller city with that sick of a dubstep community easily.
You could live in a far part of LDN with no conncection to dubstep but in Bristol its more compact and lively.

But still Leeds innit overall.

Aside from that this is a calculated move, my missus is originally from the SW so I go down their a lot and I love the place - really chilled out and a varied and vibrant scene.

Oh and I checked on a map and its about the same distance away from LDN as Notts so not a clincher...

Train's pretty cheap and only takes an hour & a half to get to Kings Cross. I just hope its the same when I move. I guess getting to Saaaaaf Lahndon might be easier??!?
