I use both, which one depends on what I'm doing. When I want a "cleaner" sound, with distinct notes, I tend toward the subtractor. When I'm going for more of a droning sound, it's the malstrom. I do also like the malstrom for some organ-like, but not quite an organ sounds.

I've just upgraded to 4 and am still learning the thor.

im an avid subtractor user myself, i have dabbled with the malstrom but have never been happy with the outcome, thats just down to my lack of knowledge but one day i will learn to use it

I make all my basses built from layers in a combinator patch. both the distorted bass and the metallic bass in this track were created with combinators using both subtractor and maelstrom.

pm me if you want the combinator file

Some freaky sounds can be made from Malstrom, that's for sure. I don't really use Subtractor atall but maybe I should go back and have a look at it... Too many synths, too little time!

This isnt necissarily true. If you click the "sync" button on the LFO, it will retrigger everytime a midi note is hit. Otherwise if you leave it unclicked, it will free cycle like you said.
