I guess it dont matter much in the grand scheme of things but its one of those trainspotter points that stick in yer head - like who had the first Punk single the Sex pistols got all the hype but the damned had a track out way before them.
The main thing is that the hoover mentasm sound was the epitome of Rave cultures 'shock of the new' to coin a fine art reference.
And I still loves it

beltram followed up with dominator which was a much bigger tune at the time
and yeah... 18 years on that sound still kicks ass... i never get sick of it in great tunes

For the benifit of clarity, I'd like to point out that hoovers and reeses are regularly confused, mixed up and identified wrongly.
Hoover = pulse wave + pulse width modulation, maybe some pitch bend on the attack portion of the sound
Reese = saw waves, oscillator
detune + low pass filter
Compare
Hoover against
Reese
Perhaps heavily distorted Reeses begin to sound like Hoovers, but if you try to distort a real Hoover, it will sound like shit.
As an aside, using phase modulation can achieve some pretty tasty hoover sounds too
(Just letting off steam... That shit vexxes me immensly haha! I need to get out more.)

do your standard ridiculous resampled reese type thing, make 3 copies, pan one left and detune it up a bit, pan one right and detune it down a bit, and play some high notes with a bit of pitch bend.

Theres one as a preset called dominator in the synth Slyenth 1. I used it in oldskool dub. Reverse engineer it???
ps heres my one tweaked -

original reese also involved pulse width modulation tbh, although on saw waves somehow. original hoover/mentasm was a preset called 'what the?' off the alpha juno 2.
anyway, pointless info there. you can make effective hoovers with saws and you can also make effective reeses with pulse waves.

Pretty good, but it's got the most important part missing. You've got to do it with the pitch wheel

!
Pitch Wheel Macro version

The 'phasing' effect from detuning two waveforms is called
beating. It often sounds similar to pulse width modulation but is not the same. Any sound source when doubled up and detuned slightly causes beating.
The only way to make a proper hoover using saw waves is by using
phase modulation on a wavetable or DDS synth. For
pulse width modulation, a
pulse tone is used, not a saw wave! Phase modulation does the same thing as pulse width modulation, it shortens half the wavecycle of a waveform while lengthening the other half. This 'distortion' of the waveshape produces a new one.

Really? Give us some proof...

heh the mentasm is one of those mythical sounds even when the creator talks about it
