Not really seen many, its all about BMX round here

Thought I'd put the record straight on this one.

A fixed wheel bike won't suit everyone, but they have many advantages.

1 Low maintenance
2 Light
3 Cheap
4 Incredibly Efficient
5 To some eyes, very clean looking, hence the fashionable status now.

Whether it suits you is down to the type of cycling you do and the terrain that you ride on. Watch some of the World Championships on BBC this weekend - incredible speeds on fixed wheel bikes - but that is their forte. A level track with no impediments like different surfaces or terrain.

So if you live somewhere hilly, or like to ride on different surfaces or are not an accomplished cyclist, a fixed wheel may not be for you. They do take some getting used to. If you have made the leap to clipless pedals and know how hard that was, think of it like that x10. A serious cyclist will know how valuable they are as a training aid - but thats for another forum...

To use an analogy, consider cars. What sort of transport suits you?

• Your Mountain Bike is a 4x4, either a hard tail (saloon) or full susser (LandRover)
  A full on competitive racer is a Ferrari or similar
  A sports bike is your Hot Hatch
  The Hybrid is the do-it-all family saloon
  A Tandem (preferbly with trailer) is the MPV or People Carrier

And the fixie? With no ABS, Cruise Control, airbags, lowered suspension, tiptronics or similar, it is back to basics. You, your wits, the machine and the road. So I'd suggest a Caterham or a TVR. Built for speed, but no frills and you need to know how to drive it. Otherwise, you're in trouble. There is a halfway house of course, as many modern single speeds come with a reversible rear wheel, fixed on one side and single freewheel on the other for wimps.

they make you go faster and they make it easier.

Used to ride fixies when I raced on the track, fuck there used to be some hell crashes! haha.

Now days am only really into mountain biking, have a dual sus and a single speed (though not fixed), be a bit to much of a mission stomping around the jungle single track on a fixed gear!

Appreciate the aesthetics and simplicity of the fixed gear bikes and if I was looking at a commuter would look at getting a fixed gear for sure, great fun to ride.

I'll be riding fixed this year, but only on the track. Had a 30mph crash riding fixed on the road and its going to take a little while yet to get that experience out my system...

Get a bmx or a proper jump bike.


It's all about custom made fixed (not freewheel, single speed) bikes. Got mine almost ready - can't wait. At the moment riding another custom made geared road bike. There's no better alternative to public transport in London. And it keeps you fit too.
