humancond1tion wrote:How do you sidechain in fruity.. and how do you bus 2 tracks together.. e.g. for a vocoder
Open your mixer and put the two tracks you want to vocode or whatever onto different insert slots (like a carrier and modulator), then select one and click on the little gray "up" arrow on the insert you want to send it to, WHILE YOU STILL HAVE THE OTHER ONE SELECTED. the little arrow will turn orange to show its being chained, and a volume knob will appear above it, letting you adjust how much is sent over from the other insert slot. do this with both your carrier and modulator, and send them to the same effects track that you have your vocoder on. what i do is put say, my modulator on track 3, my vocoder on track 4 and then my carrier on track 5. i chain 3 and 5 into track 4, and also completely turn off the "master out" on 3 and 5. this way, they will make no sound until they are played thru the vocoder or whatever you are using. Just go look in your FL mixer for the little chaining buttons and play around with them, the possibilities are almost endless. Hope that helps!

For example, if in a short section I wanted a phaser on the synth track (but not on anything else) just to help create a build, is there any way I was do this without having to duplicate the synth track and create a new effects track for that synth line.
I THINK i know what you mean, so if you mean what i think you mean, i would just throw that phaser on the synth and make an automation linked to the effect mix level, so you can fade it in to your buildup, but then turn it off as soon as you want the clean synth, that way no duplicate channels or anything. just add the phaser, right click on the knob that controls the phaser mix, select "create new automation" and poof! it throws a little editable automation curve out on the playlist. add points to the line and adjust it how you want it. If that's what you mean. also, you can click to turn the little green "lights" next to the effect on and off to solo or mute them, as well as automate them between on and off states.

all of the songs i produce sound real weak

when im mastering, using effects and such to make a more overall poweful sound (on both equalising the master mixer and individual instruments),it ends up just distorting the sounds (especially the bass)

im guessing its something to do with fl, because other songs still give a strong bass sound. would be cool to know if anyone else has expirienced this problem and what they did to give their tunes a stronger sound

There is nothing wrong with fl producing good sound, unless maybe there is some weird problem with a cracked version, but no FL is solid as any other program.

You could describe what your problem is in a bit more depth for people to give you more specific advice.

From what you described of your production process, it sounds as if that maybe the problem:
Adding fx does not equal making a more powerful sound. It isn't a case of adding more results in a more powerful sound. FX have to be added carefully, adding only what actually adds to the sound, not what you think SHOULD add to the sound.

For instance with the bass, what are you doing to it? Sub bass should be effect if left largely unprocessed, apart from maybe compression to keep the volume of the different notes at a similar level. Other bass layers need to be careful not to interfer with the sub, and with each other.

Anyway I don't need to rehash what has been said before - I highly recommend you search for the "mixing and mastering - aka the moneyshot thread". It may litereally change your life. Futures Untold has recently posted a whole thread about bass, just a couple of days ago which has links to other useful threads too.

automation clip of the tempo

yeah i tried that, is there any way to manually put in the numbers of the tempo change? whenever i use the automation clip its impossible to gauge what tempo to change it at. for example it will go from 90 to 500 with a simple small incline of the automation clip.

anyone know the piano roll hot key to temporarily override quantization? It used to be hold alt and move your note, now alt mutes the note (in FL9).

thanks in advance :)

Hi everyone. I've got a bit of a problem with FL studio and some new synths and stuff I've got. In particular, I've recently got my hands on about 12 synth VSTs but none of them are actually FOR FL Studio as such, and when I open them in FL Studio I have no option to 'create automation clip' on any of the parameters. I assume this is because they are effectively foreign to FL studio as all of my other VSTs (Morphine, Toxic Biohazard, PoiZone, Harmless etc) work fine.

Anyone else have this problem, and if so, is there a way around it?

There is.

Only the VSTs specifically designed for FL have the ability for you to right click on a knob and automate from there. All the others require you to find the parameter in file menu where you see all your samples and such. It'll be under "plugins" or "automaton" or something. It's one of those menus you gloss over until you realise that what it does.

Quicker way

move the knob you want to automate

then Tools > Last Tweaked > Create Automation Clip

look what else is in that menu too, useful stuff

Also, a tip, linking multiple paremeters to one automation clips (doesnt have to be the same synth, anything automatable) just make your auomation clip, then tools > last tweaked > link to controller, and select the automation clip you created, do this for each paremeter you want to link.

My computer getting wiped prompted me to update to FL 9 finally and I'm still figuring out the new stuff and fiddling with preferences, one thing that really annoys me is that when you minimise FL it stops playing, not sure if it's been asked already but is there anyway of stopping this? also is it likely to be a software setting or a sound card error?

In audio preferences, uncheck "Auto Close Device".
