nice tune, change the drums, give the bass drum more power it really need to slap u in the face, the snare tone is ok, also change the drum beat itself, try and get something that sounds a little more human

I'm actually really feeling this, good work for your first try. yeoku's right though, the drums are a little jarring and take away from the vibe. When I write drum loops I generally make sure that the snare falls only on the 3rd beat for at least 3 loops in a row before I change it up. if you listen to the track i posted on the last page you'll see what I mean-- the "change-up" with the snare falls on either the 4th or 8th loop. Hope that makes sense.

Also, there are a couple ways to make your drop have more impact-- first you should put an automation envelope on the main volume (if you're using FL studio, just right click the volume slider in the main mixer and click "create automation"). You want to automate the loops before the drop as going down slightly in volume, and then automate a jump up of about 6-8% for the drop. Not that the average listener will notice, but it'll give it a lot more force. Also, considering adding a cymbal sample or some other fx on the first loop of the drop, which will also give it more force. Again, I use both of these tricks on "This Isn't a Game."

Anyway I hope that's helpful. Keep making tunes, I think you're definitely on to something.

Pretty much finished this track, I think it might need a bit more too it not too sure what though .... Not strictly speaking dubstep but I've taken a lot of influences from dubstep/garage and hip hop. Thought some of you peeps might appreciate it. Any comments are welcomed on my soundcloud or myspace.

The tunes called leaky light bulb from space ... suss it here..... enjoy

The wobble is sounding pretty cool, with the drums you might want to try layering a few different kicks and snares together to give a bit more punch and eq-ing them so they sit a bit better in your mix. But a pretty good start for ur first attempt!

Great Ideas in there, I think it just needs a bit of a subtle deeper bassline, nothing too wobbly, just clean and deep.... and maybe try and few different variations on the structure, good stuff though, love the wonky melodies!

You're getting there, but I think you're going about this the wrong way... Trying to make it glitchy by only using soft FX sounds pretty daunting. I think it would be a lot easier to do it Noisia-style and export severl different versions of your bass, each with different effects and stuff, and then reload them back into FL studio as audio clips, and cut and chop them together so they sound seamless. This also saves a lot of CPU performance. I used this trick on "This Isn't a Game--" I exported different versions of the bass loop with varying degrees of wobble, and then cut and pasted them together in the audio playlist.

Also just a general note-- I like Sytrus, and I use it a lot, but never for the bass. You're probably better off copping Albino 3 or Massive for the bassline.

Riproarious - its sounding nice. I like the Cello although Im not sure such short stabs really suit the whole track, maybe try longer strokes after the drop. I like the bass, its nice and low key - but maybe it could do with a bit more variation when you bring it back in. Its sounding good though man, a good mix of sounds.

Here's something I made today - its pretty rough

Comments/feedback much appreciated

yea man, i've just been experimenting to see what fx do what and how each effect works with the other if you know what i'm saying. I'm gonna try your method (well, most peoples method) after my exams.

Thanx for the feedback

I love the cello, don't fuck with it! This track takes me to a much different place then the average dubstep track, getting really mysterious vibes. The drop needs a lot of work though-- I'm not quite sure what you're going for. If I were making this track I would program a fat bass in Albino, add a lot of wobble, and then layer the cello overtop at certain points in the drop, but then... that's Neon Ordnance.

It is a very noob track so far but I think I am getting it after reading lots of things on the dsf.

Sorry I dont have soundcloud..
nice start, your more or less on the right track. i wouldnt worry too much about structure (most dubstep songs have a structure unique to themselves) but since your just starting i would stick with 4/4 structure, its easy on the ears. any specific questions? Ive been producing for about 5 years now might be able to help you out. i would check out the production forums about eq and compression, as well as modulation (reverb, distortion, etc...)
Well I was curious what is wrong and needs to be improved on so I can try fix it and learn on the way. Does it even sound close to a song? and I am trying to make that "yeah yeah yeah" bass but I am nowhere close I sort of have it but not as distinct as it should be any tips would be nice.
Bump can anyone give me some advice it would be really appreciated. I have no musical background or anything and I know the bass is really off but I am trying.. and failing.
Hey mate, my name is Neon Ordnance and I'm a dustep producer/dj from Edinburgh. This is a start. You've got the drums down, which is good because that's often one of the toughest parts. Maybe add some more hats and change up the pattern from time to time, but they sound fine. Your bass is off, i recommend getting Albino 3 and making a "Reese" bass sound to start with. Here's a tutorial: http://www.musicradar.com/tuition/tech/ ... und-211550

I start pretty much all of my basslines off this sound, and then tweak it by either turning up the saturation, changing some of the sines into different waves, or some combination of the two.

Speaking of which, here's the latest track I've done:
Soundcloud

Needs to be mastered, tightened, etc. but this is the skeleton.
Thanks for your input I have no musical background so this is pretty hard for me but I am not going to give up because I want to pursue this and hopefully get somewhere just like all you want. I have albino already and my DAW is FL/Ableton I also use a Roland Edirol PCR-300 as my midi controller and that tutorial didn't help me very much.

Mate that's wicked. Never heard bass like that from Sytrus! I have used Sytrus quite a bit for bass and it can be awesome(as you've shown!) but its never going to beat Massive or Albino in the long run. Get either of them if you can..
