You're sine wave is not creating harmonics that are effecting your mix. Low passing/EQ'ing is not necessary by any means and will probably just screw up the purpose of your sine wave.

If you're sub sounds off it's your mix that's off.

Filtering subs by default is a bad idea.
  • The arguments about the final speaker system is just wrong. Assuming the it has a particular cut off frequency can apply. Some go down to 15 Hz. Some are already week at 200 Hz. So no particular value is correct.
  • Every sound system includes a HPF designed to fit their speakers specifications.
  • Introducing an additional filter on the signal path has some serious drawbacks whatever it's minimum phase or linear phase.
  • How to set a correct frequency value when this frequency is poorly, or not reproduced on your monitoring system? You're just shooting in the dark.
  • DC offset doesn't exist in most cases. When there is some, it's value is so low that removing it just allows a 0.01 dB gain which is a value inferior by far to crests created by the filter. So removing a low value DC offset just leads to push harder the limiter if any.
Note that the sine waves displayed above aren't sine waves. The harmonics (distortion) are obvious on the FFT display. It can be a good thing to give a bass sensation on small audio systems. LPF filters have basically the same drawbacks as HPF. The more you filter, the more you loose dynamics and audio quality. Choosing the the exact sound source you need is a much more efficient policy to achieve a world class sound. So keep your low end alive if you don't want to a tiny amateur sound.
