whoa, a lathe-cut CD?! Craaaaazy...
Reminds me of that recent Jeff Mills release with a playable record on the flip-side of the CD, that's some wild shit...!!

Don't get me wrong, boomkat is a good store, been turned on to a lot of good music, much of it I'd likely never have heard otherwise, but their hype-ups are fucking ridiculous haha, IMO way too much weak stuff gets on their recommendation list... and these days it's even worse than usual, seems about HALF of all the new stuff that comes in gets highlighted as must haves. Cracks me up. That said, noticed a bunch of the write-ups are actually just copies of the promo lit the labels send em with the releases, so obviously it's going to be slanted in those cases. Anyway, got lots of love for boomkat none the less.
yeah but i think thats the right attitude to have, obviously its a shop so they want to sell things but its just a completely positive outlook on the music. even stuff that isnt that good they write about it in a good way and i like that, theyre not trying to 'review' anything. i hate music reviews. i just go on boomkat read a few lines about what they have to say, check the clips and i can form my own opinion.
anyway today i got
zelienople - give it up , lucky i managed to find it its amazing - i have to say im a fan of the indie/drone side of this music. a lot of it is more style over substance but give it up is not. good to hear some nice melodies too

Well it's good for business but a shot to their credibility--- most distros don't seem scared to slag off a release if they really think it blows, even if it means selling fewer copies. But you're right in that no one should give a fuck what anyone else thinks, it's just too bad cause once upon a time I made a point of checking out their recommendations as I rarely have time to go through clips of 200 releases a week, but now it's mostly a waste of time IMO. Anyway, I'm sure this has been discussed to death elsewhere so I'll stop before some keen dude starts posting roll-eyes smileys at me

But again, just to be clear, got lots of love for em, reliable, sound clips are awesome and the breadth of genres they stock is remarkable. Just be great if they tightened up the ship in the "reviews/recommends" dept.

OK, OT, some of the tracks off this recent Vestigial Limb tape are insane!! Check out the sample...
^ damn thats nice, the tape side of stuff sounds really interesting but i dont think i have enough money to keep up buying the records as well as the tapes, also seems a bit pretentious.

Yeah, the sounds on that one are unreal...
pretentious, what, the cassette medium? No way man, tapes fucking rule! Perfect for this kind of scene. Cheap, anyone can make em, and they are nicer as a physical product than a cheap CDR IMO. Not exactly audiophile-quality music for the most part either haha. I get sort of the same enjoyment from popping in a tape as I do from playing vinyl, compared to a CD, it's just a bit of retro fun.

yeah i definitely understand that, id love to have a nice tape collection one day. but i dont mean that cassettes as a medium are pretentious, just that the whole scene like i said earlier is a bit too much style over substance, cool packaging cool artwork cool label, alright music. thats the impression i get from a lot of bands nowadays. not even in drone just in indie rock and all its offshoots in general. in comparison to electronic music which doesnt really have that much of an image complex

Yeah, just like any other genre/scene/whatever, there is always worthless garbage (IMO of course) being produced and released, but there are a lot of talented dudes just making tunes cause they love to do it, and there is an amazing amount of quality stuff! Really don't feel like most of em have any interest in pushing an image tbh, most of the stuff I buy is basically completely anonymous, often times there are not any credits (or even song titles!), reminds me a lot of white label dance music culture. Sure you can go researching online and find out who is involved in what projects, but for the most part these are anonymous transmissions. If anything, I find that there is a concerted effort NOT to create any image--- totally unlike much of the indie rock scene.
Just as an aside, thought I'd mention that lots of this stuff is just live jamming, straight to cassette or whatever, which gives it a totally different feel to produced music. I mean, it's basically freeform jazz made using just about any and every conceivable object as an instrument along with heavy use of field recordings etc. Took me a while to really appreciate a lot of it, but it's proven to be hugely rewarding

Self described as an 'unholy ambient mixture of slow jazz ballads, Black Sabbath doom and down tuned Autopsy sound'. Pretty fucking awesome sound.

Yessir, sexual sounds.
On a similar tip,
Moss - Monolithic riffs and gut wrenching vocals wreck and bludgeon but with an added sense for the melodic, and through the use of organ and mysterious chants atmospheres become ever more dense...
Bong - Psychedelic stoner trance doom.

Just thought i'd bump this thread back to distract from Lady Gaga tinfoil symbolism
Anyone here a fan of Birchville Cat Motel and his label Celebrate Psi Phenomenon? Some very ethereal drone music right there. Beautiful Speck Triumph was an eye opener for me, fucking astounding sounds.
A few other bands that this thread has inspired me to research and find more on:
Sombre Presage (French, dark ambient musician with some drone influences)
Stefanus Swarm (DA REAL AMBIENT BRO - field recordings and the like)
Astral Social Club (Straight up noise, but with some sweet rhythms)
Burning Star Core (Black hole music)
Fires of Ork (The guy behind Biosphere's pseudonym)
Fulci (The first of five truly kvlt, grim and bleak dark ambient projects)
Gnaw Their Tongues
Gorduw
Northaunt
Vinterriket
