Relating to sends, whats the difference between having an effect set at 20% wet on an insert, versus a 20% send to an 100% wet effect on another channel?

Try it for yourself and see. Think of it logically, the dry signal is getting processed by the send insert but also going straight to the master, if you mute the send the original channel will still play.

This means you can for example, process just the effects, here's an easy way for you to do it and understand it.

Put sample in channel, place reverb on send, feed sample into send channel; now you have a sample with reverb, place an eq after the reverb on the send and highpass/lowcut it, the reverb is eq'd but not the original sample, if you remove that eq and put it on the original channel and do the same thing you will be cutting frequencies from the original sample. There are lots of uses for doing this though, maybe someone else can build upon what i've said.

try this out though and it should help you understand it.

So it is the same output then? Just you're able to process the effect without the dry signal + save on CPU through sharing it with multiple channels?

Eq is a great example but it doesn't stop there... you can then do things to that reverb, you can have the sound going out to two slight reverbs, a delay, all eq'ed, one of the reverbs into a chorus... it just gives you more control over your fx in general. It is a way to get space and interest without swamping the mix with a bunch of malarkey. First time "malarkey" has been used on dsfp this decade. FACT.

Extra bonus: you can sidechain the fx with the original sample, helping the clarity of the original sound, but still having all the goodness of fx. Bottom line, it is all about flexibility/creativity/potential. Personally, I'm just way more comfortable with my mixer now, so the kind of psychological expense of what I thought was complex routing is just second nature now. Maybe third, but still. Try these techniques, it will pay dividens and won't cost as much as you think.

Because the kick will also be affected by the sidechain? You're ducking every element when you do this, or am I just not thinking right?

nah what you said is true, bit if you want a track where you want the kick to be pounding out at you this is a good idea isnt it. It will have to be done in moderation though, proper full on sidechaining would most likely just make it sound funny

no, it's really not a great idea actually. i mean have you ever tried it? you've got the kick ducking the kick, leaving the signal unadulterated for only the attack time of the compressor. which means your kick ends up really clicky, with the attack accented and the thump too quiet. not too great for those pounding tracks. suppose you could mess with the mix and try to fix it, but it's a nightmare

i know what you're asking. good question, and the answer is no.
you see, in your traditional reverb unit with a dry/wet knob, you can only adjust the PROPORTION between the signals, not adjust them independently (although there are certainly plugins that have that option). which means that as you turn one up, you turn the other down. with a send, you have the fader that controls the dry signal, and then you can ADD as much to the send as you want, without taking away any volume from the dry. this is preferable to me. because what if the instrument is sitting just where it needs to, but it just needs a tiny bit more reverb? if you have the reverb as an insert you will need to adjust two controls. as a send just one.

lol, I'd just tried and came onto this thread to tell people its a bad idea, seems you beat me to it :)

yeah I'm not gonna try that again... I'm gonna go make a few tracks with no sidechain, what I just did has made me resent its evil powers and I do not wish to deal with it for a while

Not gonna lie sometimes I've got a submix with everything but the kick, and then sidechain the farm out of that.

oh yeah. that's totally fine with me. do it more often than i'd like to admit actually
