Why would you do that? Never would i ever. what a waste of money that would be! I feel like this conversation is relevant to pirates only. or people who have free samples like the machine pack, or demos.. other than that, it's like paying for a synth and throwing it away. what a waste!

Besides, even if you don't like a sample, you can take it to so many different places with your tools, like Kontakt holy cow!

I could see how it would be problematic if you buy samples, although as wub said nothing to say you can't back your samples up. Really, the central theme is ditching the tools you usually work with once in a while for inspiration and perspective.

I too am guilty of having a ridiculous amount of plug-ins and samples, most of which I don't use/need. I agree w/ the concept of learning a few tools inside out and pushing them to the limits of creativity. That's actually what has happened to me naturally, even while having a shitload of stuff! I find I use a few things constantly and have learned them so well that I can make any sound that's in my head w/ them.
But that doesn't mean I'm going to delete everything else. I may use it at some point plus I payed for it so I'm not just gonna delete it.
If I had stolen all my plugs maybe I wouldn't care much about deleting them but I didn't. And my stupid amount of samples are from so many sources and were collected over such a long period of time that I wouldn't feel right just throwing them away out of sentimentality(if thats a word,) maybe.

Then again this whole thing will vary from person to person. Everyone's work-flow is different and to say, "throw away all your samples," as a blanket statement is kinda .........idk....something.

Only samples I ever kept were drums and transitions that's it.

But if you make 5 tunes and you don't use one of your so called "tools" then remove it. It will be a huge relief I can agree.

I've got quite an amount of samples myself. I often use one-shots when i produce, like drums fx and synth sounds... but apart from that, i dun rly use much more for producing. I prefer to resample and making my own shit.

Though when i fingerdrum, like on the mpc and midi fighter, i just love them loops and samples!
Dunno why, but re-making a sound and putting it in you're machine, is just so freaking satisfying.

I also got a thing for movie samples and bit samples. They often make it in to a tune as well

I started something in Sept.

I decided i had had enough of making not so great sounding tracks, i figured it was down to my sample selection.

I decided to organize my entire 80-120GB beast of a sample library. I basically wanted all my kicks (for example) from all my sample packs in a single kicks folder, in one place.

my "kicks" folder now has a bunch of other folders in it and looks like this:

kicks:

001 808 kick
002 DnB Kick
003 dubstep kicks
004 reason kicks
005 random kicks
006 real kicks
007 sub kicks
008 vengence kicks

Each of these folders have 3 more folders inside, called "best kicks", "good kicks", and "other kicks". After listening to every single sample in every sample pack i had these kicks ended up being moved into one of these folders. I then did this for every other type of sample I have, eg snares, loops, bass, musical, perc,

this has taken me months to do, and even after all this work im not sure my tracks are even sounding better because of it

Nearly all my samples are my own shit. I have some drum machine samples and some gabber kicks but that's all really. I find it refreshing to ban myself for using my sa ples and record new ones with my phone

Numeric hierarchy.

I just rate snares from 1 to 1471 by how good they are.
That way it's easy to find the 1145th best one whn you need it.

Worse snares = better snares anyway

is there some sort of a browser or some shit to quickly shift through thousands of samples and instantly play them and move em to the trash? if I do it just in finder then I have to open itunes or whatever on every instance and it will take years b4 im finished.. then again when browsin files on ableton there's the delete option but it sucks cause it hella slow

-> Finder

-> folder where you have your samples

-> right click on the first sample

-> select quick look "[name of the sample here]"

---- few seconds and small iTunes pop-up window appears and the sample is played---

Use arrow keys up/down to scroll and play through different samples. When you delete a sample (right click, Move To Trash), next one is played automatically, so you don't even have to scroll down yourself.

because it changes the way i think. like i have a pretty good liberry which helps, but i just write a word or term or something and then it comes up with a couple of suggestions that i would have forgotten about because of folders and that

BUtt i think genrli I wouldnt just use search terms like bpms, note or -insert word+wav, but would have to ½ remember a folder or a bunch of sounds

I guess it's the associative memmory or cognitive something that i can sort of get the computer to do for me now

gonna dl it and give it a go. might help me find those ancient recordings on my lappy.
