How this has anything to do with the format is beyond me. Let me go and check out the top 20 of any "reputable" shops and we'll see that they are consistently the anointed few "taste makers" and the tunes are getting regressive at this point. I hear a lot of great unreleased stuff every day. If we're talking quality control, I use a different stick than vinyl/digital... I prefer to look at the name of the producer on the release... if they are "big" they probably aren't doing anything new.

Think...

A producer gives a product.

An artist, makes Art.

A dubstep producer will make a dubstep track. He'll try to make a track that will be big in the dubstep scene. The track may reach lots of people from the scene, and be big as hell. Dubsteppers will like to party on that track...

A musical artist of the dubstep scene will draw inspiration from dubstep, but the resulting will be something that will be far from what you hear at your every-day party. It will be liked by less people in the scene, but it will be LOVED by some. And it may reach outside of the scene, since people who like art, know when they hear/see it.

To me, Kode9 and Burial are artists. Shackleton and Flying Lotus are artists. Same thing for Milanese or Scorn, or Filastine or Beats Antique or Scuba or Eskmo.

Doesn't mean that some producers doesn't sometimes makes art, and that musical artists never makes products...but you get the picture.

I can't believe people are complaining about this. Too many producers? Just how long have you been listening to music?

This is what it's about. The kids making beats on Fruity or Reason and putting them out on their netlabels are just the evolution of those who'd play punk or hard rock in their parent's garage and put it on a cassette tape.

Dubstep, especially, is a DIY culture. Start small. Try out some things, see how they work. I have the utmost admiration for anyone pushing the sound through making beats, starting a digi label, or anything else. Without you, we'd be stuck with the David Guetta's of dubstep, and to be honest I'm getting sick of them.
Whoever said vinyl is quality control, you're pretty off. I've found myself spinning unreleased stuff because it's just so much deeper and interesting. I'm getting bored of the same old 10-15 producers who bring in the cash.

In conclusion, fire up FL, make some beats, start your label, start a DJ night... you're the ones really helping dubstep.

Even though I'm an elitist asshole about music, I can't agree more about the DIY thingy.

Some of the most amazing producers are still making music in the shadow of the most known producers. Don't have anything against Skream and Benga (actually really like'em)...but sadly, there's lots of their copycats that get more known than original artists making unique deep stuff.

And for f*cks sake, most of the artwork on digital-tunes could have been made by my sister on paint. Literally. If any of you shit digital labels want to pay me Ps I will load up photoshop right now and do a better job of designing your labels "image" and promoting some sort of "integrity" or "identity".

maybe you shouldnt judge a book by its cover, i mean. i have 4 releases in the betsellers list almost all the time. that speaks for itself. who cares if u like the art or track names. if the tunes is sick, thats all that matters. or did you even bother to listen? you sound closed minded and not willing to step outside your comfort zone. maybe you feel threatened?

suit yourself... but some of the unreleased tunes on this site rival and sometimes beat the vinyl stuff... your loss. (and same goes with tunes off "digital labels")
never heard of ppl complaining about too many producers... stick with the big names, then... no1's forcing u to dig and find new stuff, LOL
and if i send someone a song it's because i think they'll like something about it. you can hate all you want, but the small timers are only getting better.
