Crossed wires. To be honest you have put up some interesting points and i respect you for that, but i think you should rephrase "Mastering' because its clearly not that, its just making things louder for people who dont yet understand how to do that yet in an effective and intelligent way.

Btw did you check out izotope ozone 4? Mid / side options on nearly all the perimeters. Makes me moist.

Correct. Thank you. All thats needed is some re-wording so things are more obvious to the less tech savvy and skeptical. I still don't think people understand that Mastering using a Plugin that is designed for that purpose is still Mastering none the less. I'm sorry if it doesn't satisfy the analog junkies but you get what you pay for. Its still the same type of processing, though quality is obviously a huge factor.

Yeah I've been looking at ozone 4 but after this experience I will fill my empty rackspace with some fruity knobs and switches or somtin, lol. Gotta twist some nipples ya know. BTW, Gravity is soundin killer, good composition.

I thank everyone for your input. I appreciate everyones time taken and amusement regarding this topic. I apologize to everyone who took my comments the wrong way. I will be sure to keep you posted of future developments, lol. :t:

"Collective" your trying way too hard bro. :u: And when you take 20 min to quote things out of context it makes you look like an ass :L: !! Congratulations bro we're even. Go make some dub and clear your mind. Why u wastin all that talent on me? :i:

@ Builder beats, mate you don't need to go outboard it's much more cost effective to invest in some quality high end software plugs.

Why not look at different processes that are done in mastering and what tools would be best for the job

i.e Minimum phase, linear phase equalization
Various analog compressor emulators,
Different limiters, (more transparent ones for certain tracks, less subtle for tracks where you want to hear them working)

Read up on your art, I would love to do Master engineering but I know I sure as hell don't know enough yet, when I do someday though I know I need at least a proper listening environment and a pair/multiple pairs of monitors I can trust.

@Depone, mate mid-side mastering was brought up in class the other day but not really discussed, what the hell is it?

I was gonna hazard a guess at splitting the stereo bus, mono'ing the bass frequencies (mid) and then using some kind of stereo expansion on the highs (side), was I close?

edit: nevermind, I figured it

I was trying to work out these monitors were, then I realised they are the same practically as my ones for listening to Spotify off my PC sitting infront of me, they are monitors only by name, they are just powered low end HIFI speakers.

Simpler than that, it's just a system of using phase to separate the Mid and Side channels, what you do to them is your choice.. for example, just a recent one I've used sometimes if you have a track which has dull hi hats and a bright snare, making the top end sound confused. In this case you can use EQ on the sides, assuming the hats are panned, to make the difference less, or vice versa.

Sometimes it's just a case of turning one channel down to create a more natural sounding stereo image.

You can use "stereo expansion" but it sounds like ass 99% of the time IMHO. A great way to tear your mix apart.

It's not 'using phase' (although that could be considered a convoluted way of looking at it). It's sum and difference. L+R = middle/common, L-R = sides/difference.

I'm not commenting on anything else in this thread.

Thanks for shedding some light, I must admit I'm still a little confused.

L + R = the stereo mix no?

L - R = the subtraction of everything in the middle?

well done on not getting dragged into the rest of the thread btw, you've developed you're diplomatic skills just as much as your engineering skills I guess :)

No, literally:

Left channel plus the right channel

Left channel minus the right channel

One gives the common elements (middle)

One gives the elements that are different (sides).

In practice the subtraction is done by inverting the phase of one channel and adding them. So to say 'it's using phase' isn't totally inaccurate, but really you're just changing the sign of the values on one channel.

Actually this is terribly OT so we should stop.

there is nothing out of context about your hypocrisy. But I have said my piece, and I am done.

"Why am I wasting all my talent on you?"

You really shouldn't insult people when you are "ripe" (and that is a kind word for it) for personal insults. :a:

Well yes, I didn't really provide enough information to make it worth posting TBH, maybe I should have said "phase cancellation", But yeah well explain and OT... perhaps repost in a little more detail in a new thread Macc, might be a search function friendly post?

Mad props to builder! I just finished working with him on one of my amateur productions, and he certainly applied a magic touch. My tune sounds crisp, clean, and plenty of volume
and if you can't afford the $20 just tell him whats up, he'll work with you 8)

Collective lets alpacas do him in the tush... hence the "butt sore-ness" we've all experienced in this thread

Collective, I've heard KY jelly is really good for that kind of thing... cigarette.

Ez man, I'm curious would you be able to send the before and after songs?

would you mind if I had a stab at seeing where my "mastering" stands,

1. worst case scenario I fuck up, you get some exposure
2. better case scenario I do a good job, you get some exposure and another master to A/B
3. best case scenario I do an amazing job, you get some exposure and an even better master than you ever thought possible

Most likely is going to be 1, maybe 2 but you never know especially since I've never done anything for anybody before.

For the record, being in an untreated room, with nothing but Logic stock plugins, no clients to my name etc

I won't be calling myself an ME, and I won't really be calling this a mastering job if you agree, just wanna see what I could actually do to someone elses tunes,

peace
