It's actually an M-Audio Trigger Finger

I thought it was an MPD24 at first.

Have fun mate! He's one hell of a performer and nicest guy you'll ever meet!
I saw him once when he was in FFTL then twice when he was just under the name Sonny...(all pre Skrillex)
But who knows a lot can change in 2 years since lol
Let us know

GV1 wrote:I've listened to most of Shrillex's tracks over the past couple of days. Previous to this thread I'd only heard about 5 tracks in my friends car, and instantly I could hear what he was doing because it's something I do with the MPC's to trigger the sounds. The thread was more geared towards resampling, and then triggering the sounds with pads. After watching his videos I also see he uses an MPD like device (might be an MPD 24).
I didn't mean to say every top producer has no idea what they are doing, but in the underground there are a lot of young producers that get signed because there initial tracks are good and they show consistancy at the start, but slowly they start to drop off because they can't compete with their own productions. Probably why Shrill sounds like Feed Me because he gets help on the productions.
I know when I'm producing with someone, because I'm the engineer and I spend most of my time on the track it tends to sound like the stuff I do. Even though the other people work on the track it still has my feel.
I'll put up a video on Youtube on using Access Virus, Machine and resampled bass sounds. Shit can sound very interesting when you are punching pads rather than a keyboard keys.
But, Broken Note and such like have been producing that sampled choppy sound way before the new school producers appeared on the scene.
Edit: I'm talking about his Dubstep here. I'm not a fan of his electro. It's far to simple for my liking.
I would be very interested to see how a pad affects the sound so much. DO IT. Please put up a video.
But now that you mention it, whenever he uses that trigger finger thing live, he always seems to hagger the shiit out of his tunes. Making it sound screetchy and more distorted then the original track. He could be very well using this for his bass and recording the sounds giving it that real grungy distorted sound. Very interesting. It seems the light on Skrillex is starting to shine brighter more and more everyday now. lol

The pads don't change the sound, but they allow more freedom than a keyboard or using the mouse to put samples in place. You can be more spontanious. You *could* do it with a midi keyboard, but you always know its a keyboard and you subconsiously treat it like a keyboard. Bashing pads is a more creative way of triggering and playing.
Stick different variations of the sample at different pitches on the pads, different filters, effects etc. Put some instrument, sfx and vocal chops on there to. Bashing the basslines at 1/16th hitting some vocal chops and sound effects booms. It's when the crowd ejaculate all over your set.
You can also create routines ... thats when you start playing live.
I'm going to try do the video tonight, I've had to restore a HDD after a format last night and I've still got to resample. I'll get it up asap
Edit: Whatever Shrillex is, he's creative. When you start getting creative you start creating new sounds that are fresh to peoples ears. Thats why these producers blow up in the scene. It probably took him a long time to find his ground. I don't know his engineering skills, or his synthesis skills but he knows how to use sounds. And rather than people going "OMG HOW DID HE DO THAT BASS!?!?!?!" it's more productive for the community to actually talk and learn from his whole process. You learn new things, this sparks new creativity, which sparks new sounds and new memes. Evolution. It's the key to survival.

it's resampling. easy to learn, easy to get really good results if you try it enough times, hard to master / get repeatedly good results

Many people have said the same thing. I'm kinda new to Shrillex compared to those following him from the start.
Did Shrillex go by another alias/name previous to his breakthrough? And previous to his breakthrough was his productions up to the standard they are now? And finaly was his productions similar to the DeadMau5 "man dem" (pre deadmau5 signing)?
It's mad how I've followed Deadmau5 for years and never heard of the rest of his signings/co-producers/engineers. I thought he was a solo dude. I took an Interest in him because he was a fellow hacker from IRC scene before he made a name in the music business. Now he's a the pimp daddy of his own little world. He's created his own brand and his own meme that has millions of followers. His marketing team must be brilliant.

Haha no way, I thought Datsik was black as well. Bassnectar and Caspa too, haha.

Not that I know of. He messed around with producing before hand whilst he was in FFTL, found a sound, rolled with it and it took off.

Lol datsik is Canadian, bass nectar is American? But he has long ass straight hair looks like a metal head. Caspa looks like funtcase, British w short hair. And sine, skrillex isnt going to Edc Vegas, after what happened in Edc Dallas, he doesn't want to support that kind of behavior that goes on there so he's not performing, he posted it on his Facebook.
And the only other alias skrillex went by was sonny Moore. He released a few songs as sonny Moore. Not actually released but you know what I mean.

What does the color of skin have to do with the dubstep? Surely we're beyond the days where urban music "must" equal black influences. I shiver at the thought of thinking in terms of "color".

Can his earlier work be heard? I mean his very early work? If not, he must have had an alternative name. Either that, or he never uploaded his music.

I was a Sonny fan for quite a long time now..from his fftl days...
Shortly after he quit FFTL(band) he kind of went quiet for a while..
After some while he started releasing tunes under his myspace at the time..It was either myspace.com/sonny or myspace.com/sonnysounds (check if you will)
His first track I remember hearing was entitled Equinox(go on youtube and type Equinox Sonny or Sonny Moore)
After months of him releasing free tracks he started to tour on the AP Tour with bands like All Time Low
His style was mainly alternative with a twist of electronic influence..That is when I saw him twice, was during this period!
He went by the name "Sonny" and he called his band behind him "The Blood Monkeys"!
Around this time he released an EP entitled "Gypsyhook" that was released on iTunes(try looking it up, it might still be available)
After the AP Tour Sonny started touring once again but in the UK and would perform DJ sets..
From here on he had been remixing other artists tunes and started to gain a little bit of hype..(I can't remember when but he also released Slats Slats Slats, that was more of a dubstepish vibe to it)
Then I remember him releasing 3 more free tunes on his myspace after months of being on tour..
These songs were called TURMOIL, OCEAN, and LUSTBUG
He still had that alternative feel but the songs were sounding more and more abstract..
After that I can remember him tweeting a link to his free EP My Name Is Skrillex on twitter and from there on I think you know what happened...
Wow look at me I sound like such a stalker
Anyway there is some info missing but that was just from the top of my head!
I hope that fixed some confusion around here

Don't be pretentious. I thought Feed Me was black because Sonny uploaded a picture on his FB claiming it was him with "Feed Me and DatsiK", I knew who DatsiK was but the only other guy there was a black man and he was literally trying to 'eat' Skrillex. So I thought, "hm, that must be Feed Me." To this day I'm sure that was just bad tagging. I used to get Caspa mixed up with Coki, probably due to he Fabriclive album.
Their race doesn't mean or change anything, but it did confuse me to the point I started to believe Spor and Feed Me were different people. But I've seen Nectar live, so that was cleared up easily
