sorry i lost my train of thought for a moment...

definitely agree with gwa when it comes to beat matching

gwa wrote:i'm surprised the lack of mentions disco is getting. the drums and unsyncopated, the phrasing is very erratic to the point where you really have to know your records.

once you know how to beat match you can beat match anything innit.

give me 2 dance records and i'll have it matched in under 5 seconds.

give me 2 records that have drums that aren't in time and i'm riding that pitch like i'm riding your mum.

Anyway, I'd probably say Disco/funk/soul, real drummers fuck me up and also some of the phrasing in those old records ia just confusing

drum & bass IMO... DJs like Andy C on 3 decks, no one can test.

or old house / disco as people have mentioned, DJs like Ron Hardy :Q:

the amount of speculation that his dubs were cut at the same bpm has left me unsure if it's true or not.

he's great, ofcourse though

Hip hop. The average hip hop DJ puts 'dance'/'edm' DJs to SHAME

It's no harder to mix 7/8 than it is 4/4. As long as you're used to the groove of a time signature it's all the exact same theory.

CDJ scratching blew my mind lol. Was an insane set, so much hardware. Couldn't keep my eyes off it, he didn't stop moving for a second.
If you've got an hour spare, he goes into detail on what he does and what technology he is using to do it in this video;

Cheers I'll check it out tomorrow. Its the type of set I love on Boiler Room, very visual as well as the great music/mixing.

I agree with Gwa, Disco deserves more credit.

Question for those saying Hip Hop.. I'm clueless on Hip Hop DJing, I've seen loads of DMC championship videos and stuff and although I appreciate it takes a lot of technical skill I find them for the most part utterly boring. My question, how rehearsed are those? They come across as though they've practised the exact set over and over to perfection. Thats not as impressive to me as someone seemlessly floating through different genres and different bpms of music, creating incredible blends and mash ups along the way.. all in an unrehearsed, unplanned set.

being eclectic is more of a selector DJ rather than talking about technical difficulty

Personally I'm not so impressed by the nobbing about with technology thing.

Rather see someone who can just tie together loads of music from all over the place like Theo Parrish or Gaslamp Killer rather than this "I can use my ipad to do crazy reverbs, play house at dnb speed, loops whatever" crap.

Or someone who can build energy through a set or make it have a direction through tune selection.

Tune selection above everything for me.

Seemlessly floating through genres and bpms, creating incredible blends and mash ups you say? To be honest I don't give a shit if this is planned.
