Looking pretty definite for Septemberish, am looking on gumtree for two bedroom flats/houses at the moment.

Thinking or any other bristol based person - I'm looking at St Andrews, where else is good? I want to live somewhere fairly central, not in a posh area and not in a shithole area preferably...

St Andrews is good, as is Montpelier (between St Andrews & St Pauls), Cotham, Redland, Kingsdown...

Clifton gets a bad rep for being too posh, but it ain't all that bad apart from crowds of bellend students. Clifton Village is v posh and mainly quite expensive tho.

St Pauls is nice too - has a bad rep but is no worse than anywhere else.

Southville / Bedminster is alright too.

Gumtree def the best place to look, you could ask on hijackbristol.co.uk too, there's often people looking for flats/rooms/new flatmates. Bear in mind prices seem to be taking a hike at the mo now that the arse has fallen out of the housing market and more people are renting - landlords taking advantage of the situation. :|

one thing i would add is that if your the type to get enraged by trustifarian types poss best to avoid St. Andrews.. the park up there is usually full of K-head crusty jugglers and 16 year olds addicted to hippy-crack...

if your after somewhere pretty central St. Pauls is a good bet.. well positioned for easy walking access to the centre, the stokes croft/Glos rd area. eastons not to far and Temple Meads Train station is about 30-45 mins on foot.. plus your can find a shared-house all in rent for @ £250-320 and that'll usually be a pretty decent place as well..

I grew up in Bristol. Then I got fucked off with the constant drugs and moved away so I could start my life again. Since I lived in Bristol, I have travelled around the UK. I've lived in Newcastle, Manchester & Oxford. From Oxford, I have been to London plenty of times, as it's right on the doorstep.

This is my impression of Bristol having both lived there and in other places.

x2 Lot's of smashing free parties, lot's of cider drinkers, lot's of police in riot gear. (But they don't make it to ever party, so sometimes it goes off without a hitch! ;))

Sounds about right. St Pauls, Easton, Eastville, Lawrence Hill and Barton Hill all have a rep for a reason mind you....

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Regarding buses in Bristol.... They're shit.

Let me rephrase that for clarity. They're f***ing appallingly c***ingly shit!

No night buses, you must be joking right? Minimum fare of £3 for 2 stops. (I may exagerate, but not by much..... you've been warned). They stink of piss - because some of my mates piss on them. They're covered in gob because random crackheads spit on them. They're full of depressed old people who never left Bristol once in their life.

And finally.... They never never never never arrive! Yup, it says they come every 20 minutes, but it's all lies. If they do come, it's after an hour wait, most certainly not on time!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Safety notice - Don't venture more than 1 mile outside of the city centre!

Millions of racist white hooligans that love nothing more than to bottle you and scream in your face. Millions of crack head chavs trying to jump you. Millions of rude boy asians who get their cousins involved. Millions of black yoot gangsters that roll with knives for 'protection' and love nothing more than to rob you for your money and weed!

Violence in Bristol is endemic. My mates dad was knifed in the phone box for no reason. My other mate has been bottled so many times it's not even funny any more. Yet more of my friends have been set upon with bricks, robbed and generally abused.

If any readers think I'm exagerating, then you've clearly never lived in Bristol, or you live in one of the nice studenty posh areas like Redland and wear Birkenstock sandals.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So can I recommend Bristol?

Maybe.

The club nights are good. There's lots of different music events going on almost nightly. There's basically something for everyone!

The free parties are good. The drugs are good. The chavs are good. The local accent is good.

If you're the kind of person that likes bumping into someone you know every 5 minutes, then Bristol is definately for you!

If you like the endless 24hr buzz of large cities, London is for you.

You live in Notts right now? Bristol isn't that different IMO. Bristol has more hills making it a pain in the arse to travel around, Bristol is smellier and it has a better music scene.

Apart from the seagulls who never shut up, Bristol is not really a 24 hour city. You can't drink coffee in a cafe at 3am. You will have to avoid drunken yobs throwing kebabs at you (and that's just the women).

If you like constant adventure and ending up in random locations, move to london. If you like opportunity and being amongst people from all over the world, move to London. If you like things inbred and aggro, move to Bristol.

Amen.

Haha big up future untold, given me a lot to think about

Surely violence is endemic in London too, though?

I've got no illusions of Bristol being a picture postcard city but is PARTICULARLY violent?

I mean, Nottingham's got a reputation for violence but I've never really run into anything, maybe because I keep myself to myself in the right situation and don't go to cheese clubs

Agreed. Its difficult to judge these things from personal experience. Wigan has a massive problem with violence but I've barely experienced any. Usually violence occurs between people who know each other anyway. I've talked to people who have lived in moss side all their lives and have never seen anyone be shot or stabbed but apparently there is a massive problem there.
