I'm probably jumping in on this thread far to late for anyone to actually read my post but fuck it. I've been a DJ for about 15 years, spent the first 10 of those years lugging flight cases and boxes of vinyl about, I then started using Serato. I've also spend a sadistic amount time learning and practicing scratching/beat juggling/turntablist stuff making playing records a more complicated task.

Recently I've got myself an APC40 and have deconstruction all our tracks into bit & pieces so they can be played, remixed and mangled in Ableton. I don't pretend I'm doing the same thing with Ableton as I did with turntables, sure you can use Ableton to play one track after another but I make an effort to get involved with the music (at to behonest I'm hardly scraping the surface yet) and all I can tell you is keeping a set together and keeping track of all the parts of the project in Ableton is a complete mind fuck and requires far more concentration that playing records.

Casing point, I could get completely pissed and hold together a half decent set on the turntables...chances of that happening in Ableton is zero...sure it keeps everything in time but that's just the start of it.

Pfft, I'm so sick of fake ass 'vinyl' dj's.

Personally I only mix vinyl, I do prefer the format (enter typical reasons here), but I feel pressured to get CDJs pretty badly because often if you rock up at a club to do a set, the turntables aren't maintained, no slipmatts, awful needles, unsterdy platforms etc etc etc, plus being only vinyl I literally can't play dubs I can't afford a CDJ, don't know anyone with one, and don't fancy my first attempt at using one being in a set. Basically I'm screwed lol.

Someone give me a CDJ please.

everybody knows vinyl wins. You guys using ableton and cdj's just don't want to admit it because otherwise you would feel bad you spent a k on that digital shit.

absolutely.

Not arsed what format the dj is playing to be honest, as long as the tunes are decent and everyone's having a good time.

Digital DJ’s are cool (imo) if you are playing your own tracks, like some live remixing thing, or if you are a label head then mixing/live remixing the releases on your label. That is about as far as my tolerance goes with them. Why would you want to book a DJ who turns up to a night with an Apple & some Ableton, mixes tunes that have been released and the whole set sounds un-naturally tight whilst you pay him a 3 figure sum for something you could of learnt online if you have enough time on your hands and aren’t a serial wank artist. The same goes for mixing live with turntables, (I was a S.W.A before I mixed, now I am just a W.A ) except the DJ, I believe has more of a battle to keep the records in time, has more original sounding techniques at his disposal (without having to adjust XYZ on the settings screen, then re-booting, re-sending the FX, re-loading, Cueing, etc...), and of course, it’s vinyl, and the next DJ can play straight after you have dropped your last tune, rather than wondering if taking out the line on channel 2 is going to turn the speaker stack off or not.

own productions are of course okay digital imho. though i stick on my tables in such cases and use scratch for own productions.

yeah, basically.

plus I find watching people playing 'digitally live' very dull. there's a lot less margin for error when playing vinyl and I (personally) believe it requires a different set of skils from re-editing and relooping stuff through ableton or whatever, and i enjoy watching people playing dubs more as a result. that's not to say there isn;t skill in doing the latter, because quite clearly there is a LOT of skill involved in digitally re-editing stuff live.

(cue haters etc.)

just for infos I love using ableton for mixes, but I don;t like to rely on it/use it at all playing out. for instance i did this mix back in 2005 with my mate. All the tunes were spun on 1210's with a vestax scratch mixer, but there was no way we'd have been able to put the accapellas on without ableton.. it's an amazing programme.

(tbh though, I say this and I'm sure if the stuff dj x was doing digitally live was interesting enough, i wouldn;t really give a fuck whether they were doing it through an electric banjo or not.)

i am personally holding the opinion that there should be producers and there should be djs. what happens when a producer has to dj or the other way around is you get a half assed product. im not saying that everyone that djs cant make a track or the producers can spin but to really be at the top of your game in either you dont have time for the other.

A DJs job is to make people dance, take them places, show them new tunes, repsond to shifts in crowd mood etc etc. It doesnt matter on what format this is achieved and the sooner you realise this the better.

Its hilarious that people like you get worked up like this over something so trivial. "A retarded monkey" can also buy records and learn to beat match, its fucking simple. All the other DJ skills besides these are what make the difference. Grow up.
