there's a nice lack of discipline going on as well (and the crippling of what can be doled out as discipline on teachers and administration's part) and honestly i'd say that a good chunk of today's generation spends more time interacting with their teachers rather than their family...

i was fortunate enough to have some teachers who took an interest in me more than just a student and kept me out of trouble a few times
hell had one stop by my graduation party to wish me the best and give me a present, and i was one of those honor student, but slacker types

but yea guns legal or illegal have no place on any campus, except maybe by security
it's a shame that part of school budgets go to metal detectors and such rather than up to date books and learning materials

I think it mostly boils down to the culture. The US is swimming in fear. People are suspicious of someone on their lawn, and afraid of the people next door. Their first thought is often to react with violence. This is how the US gov itself works, shoot first ask questions later. So it's no surprise the people do the same. As mentioned before, sensationalist journalism and bullshit American news sources feed people this message of fear day in day out. Everyone wants to be the first to report the most violent crime of the day. (BREAKING NEWS! Happening Now!) It's programmed into citizens at this point.

Many people I've talked to mention how they will shoot someone "on their property" to protect their stuff... I mean, really wtf? I'm not talking about protecting the lives of loved ones from some nut, I mean something as stupid as vandalism or petty theft. The first reaction is all too often to react violently, because they are already expecting the other person to do the same.

I know about red scares, and that's the type of stuff I was talking about. I don't get where you were going with the "media informs you part" though, the fear is obvious from just talking to people (again "not all of us").

I've mentioned it a couple of times on here but a few years back a house around here got broken into while a girl was home alone and the burglars raped and tortured her.

if i'm not mistaken, the guy who shot up Virginia Tech was mentally unstable. he was classified as unstable multiple times before the massacre. he was able to buy the guns he used by omitting the fact that he had mental health issues from his background checks. sometimes, people are going to go insane and do something terrible. making things illegal isn't going to stop it.

neither will making things as easy as possible.

there's nothing wrong with defending yourself or your own property

i'd hazard a guess to say if the girl who was home alone pulled out a gun and started shooting at the robbers they'd either leave, or murder her.
