Is it because this is what early dubstep sounded like or something? Ive only been listening to dubstep for a few months now, and i do think most burial tunes are incredible, but cant see how they are labeled as dubstep. they sound nothing like the majority of dubstep tunes. Does he want his tunes labeled dubstep? seems more like downtempo or some shit

i think people connect his name with 'dubstep' because he is signed to Hyperdub which is one of the scene's biggest, most influential labels (even though most of the stuff they put out is left of centre and sometimes not really dubstep at all...)

it is also probably because his sound ties in with old 2 step garage/pirate radio vibes and because he is friendly with many of the big names in the 'dubstep' scene and collaborates with some of them...

i doubt he would want his music to be labelled as 'dubstep' or anything else for that matter...he is just doing his thing, Kode9 heard it, liked it and released it...

yeah basically at the time (of his first release) there wasn't really a better genre for it. South London Boroughs isn't as 'ambient' sounding as his later stuff, and there were fuck all tunes coming out at the time with any kind of rolling halfstep vibe. so it was almost by default, i suppose...

It's easier to promote Burial records that way. 2-step has long left the media's limelight, while dubstep was just blowing up internationally around the time his first record came out. Might as well lump him in with the hippest, trendiest, hottest scene at the moment, no?

No hate, tho'. That's just the way the industry works and I'm glad a great producer like Burial has as much critical and commercial acclaim as he's gotten.

Thanks for posting that, had two burial albums for a while but never really listened to them. Just been having a proper listen and it's some of the most inspirational stuff i've heard in ages and ages.

I enjoy classic Burial. I love his ambient tunes. Unite, Near Dark, and Ghost Hardware are all wonderfully ambient and as equally dark.

oh, really? so genre's sound all exactly the same?

alot of his stuff is based around 2 step beats, which is one of dubstep's predecessors, so naturally alot of people into dubstep will be drawn to 2 step artists... why is this so confusing for people?
