I know a year ago people were skeptical of D&B punters stepping over to the Dubstep side... I had so many people give me a hard time saying that it was just a phase and basically just shutting me out because I come from D&B background... eventhough I came from D&B, everyone knows my true love and background is Dub but thats another story. anyhows, I have been getting tons and tons of emails and messages like the one below and though i would share...

I think the introduction of new poeple to dub / dubstep is crucial for the survival and growth of what we are doing. its everywhere now!

this shit made me smile.. i know its a bit cheesy to post tins like this but fuck it... who feels it knows it.

letter from NZ,

"""just wanted to drop u line line to say that the dubsteb scene has been growing here in christchurch NZ for awhile now, with a few of our biggest local DNB djs starting to play dubstep instead (most of them good friends of mine).

i havent really been feeling dubstep at all, found it quite boring (i mix dnb myself), but i heard a mix from you a couple of days ago and that all changed..

i went down to the record store today and bought up all the tunes of yours they had in stock.. could be the start of a new era for me!

so just wanted to say respect bro, keep up the good work your tunes are putting me in the best musical place i've been in a long time. truth.

will be keeping a close eye on all your future releases for sure. peace. """""

i could give two fucks about what "scene" people come from to dubstep, as long as they listen with an open mind and don't stand in my way when the bassline hits.

Dubstep has given me passion for my music again, I come from a DnB background but before that it was Hardcore from the late 80's early 90's. A lot of us that have arrived hear with Dubstep, probably loved the old school.

I didn't realise ex DnB heads were frowned apon by Dubstep listeners:?:

I am an old reggae-head. Mostly I would go to events that would play a) traditional roots reggae and dub, and b) dancehall. Does this make me some sort of pariah too?

I don't want to come across as offensive or anything but if there's one thing that irritates me about dubstepforum it's this whole "converting" thing.

It's just to me "converting" seems like some fundamentalist religion bullcrap and paired with the whole "jaded junglist" and "d'n'b vs dubstep" concept it can bring some really negative vibes.

To me personally it's all about expanding your musical tastes, not abandoning one genre I like for another - that's backwards mentality.

I have felt dubstep was being thrown at me at first and I did consider it some journo's malarky and thought it'd be a shortlived fad. But then I got myself a copy of Burial's LP (surprise surprise), listened to Boxcutter, some Digital Mystikz, Kode9's Memories of The Future album, Benga, got a vinyl of Mary Anne Hobb's Warrior Dubs, Rephlex compilations, started reading blogs and got interested in Kode9's bass wars concepts, Kodwo Eshun, CCRU etc. and realised it's deeper than Mixmag articles about "revolutionary new club music hailing from Croydon".

But all that's happened has nothing to do with "converting" - it's all evolving and expanding my base of musical interests. I listen to dubstep now, I try and help to promote it with events I'm involved in, I go and support artists, buy vinyl but all that didn't stop me listening to d'n'b, buying d'n'b vinyl, enjoying researching the good music within the genre.

The same way d'n'b has never stopped my listening to good/independent hiphop and hiphop has never been an obstacle to my listening to jazz/ambient/click electronica/house, etc.

I'm sure for some of you "converting" means as much as "getting into" but after reading numerous "dnb is dead / dnb sucks - dubstep is my new found love" posts I see it as negative. And from what I've noticed outside of this forum I'm not alone in my opinion.

Someone said it on here before: there is no competition between dnb and dubstep, it's ok to listen to both. Therefore - stop converting people to dubstep - instead make them expand their tastes and let them add it to whatever music they've been listening to so far.
