So what's the best way of doing this?
Raffle tickets sold on one side of the room, 'prizes' won on the other side?

Yes, pretty much. It's how church fetes etc get around not having to apply for temporary licenses.

You may have an issue then if you're in a venue. There are two parts to an alcohol license, sale
and consumption on the premises.

Not a venue, just a 14th century crypt I'm putting a gig on; never been any music there to my knowledge, don't send me to prison?

yeah, raffle tickets were how Corsica did it for quite a while- a good way to avoid multiple tills/people handling cash too.

That's not to avoid licensing laws though, that's so that they reduce the number of cash registers they need to keep topped up/secure, and to reduce queue times when the servers deal with handing out change etc.

by thinking
can't you just apply for a temporary license these days?? It was part of the shake-up to licensing laws a few years back, I think you can put on a few events per year unless I've completely misunderstood how it works....
