Hey guys! I'm wondering how I'd go about producing a sound like this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Q6A-Zi0H4g
Starting right around a minute in.

Alternatively, here is another song with a somewhat similar sound:

Starting right around 55 seconds in.

Is there actually a specific name for a sound like this?

Thank you guys in advance, it means a lot.

I would do it in FM8 (primarily for its great envelopes):

Start with a ratio 1 sine carrier, run a modulator that is offset to your carrier. Play with the envelope of pitch, amplitude and modulation until you find something that kinda works. Apply some EQ'ing/distortion to it. You might want to layer a transient on top of that and finally round it off with compression and further EQ etc. If you're not happy with the kick slightly changing character between tones (from the offset) you can obviously chose resample it.

It's really that simple
