Dubstepforum Awards - Winner's: 2005 , 2006 , 2007

So we're close to that time of the year. The moderating team felt that it would be best to let the community decide whether or not a Dubstepforum Awards is something worth doing again. We've done it for 3 years now, this year being the 4th. With the polling system that we're confined to using on this site's software; it can never be a 100% accurate affair. We've done our best to try and make the process, the best representation of the community.

The awards do highlight hard work, talent and popularity, but in the process also creates a competitive atmosphere and generally kicks up a lot of aggro vibes to go with it. Many people felt that the whole notion of an awards is flawed from the start, as music can't really be a competition. Its too subjective.

The reason why we started the awards in the first place was to recognize the people that put so much time into the sound without any recognition for their efforts. It was also at a time when the sound was still very underground. This year, its a completely different thing all together. We're at a tipping point.

It's really important to hear your opinions, whether they be harsh, positive or otherwise. All that we ask is that when being critical, please be specific and explain your position a bit.
"The awards were really shit, and I didn't get one."....isn't criticism....it's a comment. Please expand on things, because otherwise, you're not contributing to debate, just making a spectacle.

cheers,
The Moderating Team :)

Can't see the harm. Perhaps it should be agreed that Mala can't win best producer if he doesn't actually release anything all year.

I personally enjoy it...

Just a bit of fun for me, enjoy voting and enjoy seeing people who deserve some credit getting some props...

But yeah it just can't be taken too seriously I guess, it's all in good fun

I've gotten some pm's about the awards process. For all the new people it goes something like this:

-A nomination round. Threads are started, where each member can nominate someone for the category in question...ie Best DJ, Best Website, etc. At the end of a set time period, the threads are closed for nominations and all the results are added up. So for each category you get a list of top nominated names/items...ie DJ John Doe has 43 nominations and DJ Jane Doe has 56.

-A voting round. Polls are started for each categories top nominees (in the past its been either the top ten, or we've used a minimum). At a set time the polls are closed, and from those votes, a top ten list is created.

-Results announced at a later date. A party may or may not happen depending.

I'm ambivalent - on one hand, I think talent and hard work should be recognized, but on the other hand,

If you proceed with the awards this year, at the very least the nomination system should be overhauled. Last year for example you needed X number of nominations to be in the final poll, whereas picking the ten producers / labels / singles / albums / mixes / MCs / grandmas / etc with the most nominations would leave fewer deserving candidates out in the cold.

agreed last years award were a bit predictable. Its still relatively new genre so guess there are only handful of big players. I'm in favour of changing nomination process.

i'm interested to see whose dubstepforum granny of the year :D

Think it's definitely something we should keep doing...and better we do it how it's supposed to be done rather than letting the NME or Q get hold of it, lol.

Only concern is stopping new board members from joining, that's the only negative for me...is there a way round it this year?

If only for this reason, yes.

i think its a great way of recognising and celebrating talent, and whilst a competitive atmosphere isn't necessarily what people want, the end result is a positive thing even for those who don't win, as a nomination alone recognises their work.

the only thing would be the issue of not letting new members join the board during the fairly lengthy nomination process, but i'm in favour of the concept of an awards, with the awards being used to highlight a certain artists contribution, rather than to say "DJ x is better than DJ y" or whatever

Agreed there but I think that is always going to be the case for some sections. Best Radio Show Hmmm its gonna be N-Type and so on.

For me its a bit of fun and I'm sure thats the same for most, no one needs this to know they have been working hard, do you get awards at work every year!

Bigup to the mod team for putting this out early and for being proactive about something that must be a huge headache lol!

Happy voting!

although an awards system is inherently flawed, i say it is a good idea.

I think it certainly gives newcomers to the scence somewhere to start when looking for mixes, djs, ep's etc to check out, which then opens up a hole can of beans.

ye why not.

i understand the arguement against it, and it raises some valid points but if everyone kinda takes a step back we could have fun with it.

i think if approached in the right attitude its great. it is competitive but really with the growth over the past year and all the good music and raves everyones a winner. this is just to kind of send an appreciation to those who have put in the most effort.

since when has being competitive been a bad thing? competitiveness and positivity are in no way mutually exclusive.

i think it's a good way for fans to show their appreciation and for producers/djs etc to get the recognition they deserve.

I say go for it, at the end of the day, last year, it appeared to be a lot of fun, no one seemed to take it TOO seriously, like to the point of being upset at not getting an award/feeling cheated etc... I think its good for the community as a whole, its good for the sound and its good for artists out there putting time and effort in to get the recognition they deserve, although I must agree that the nomination system does need overhauled a bit.

The CBS (R.I.P) done there top 100 show at christmas. It worked whereby forum members woudl submit ten tracks they feel should make the top 100. Any track that makes it into the list is only allowed in the list for two years running, after which it will no longer be considered; purley to give other artists making tracks a chance to get in instead of the same rehashed nominations and winners every year.

Im not sure how feasable this idea woudl be to fit into the awards. Possibly if you won it last year then you cant be included this year, could have last years winners presesnt this years winners with their award allowing for recognition of the achievements of said artist from the previous year, while at the same time giving this years winners their dues.
