automation

okay, so I have figured out how to make drum patterns/sounds and use a synth to make leads and wobble bass (though at early stages). But I can't figure out what automation is.

I see it quoted everywhere but have no idea what it is how it's used.

Could anyone give me a brief description and how it can be used in reason? I assume somewhere in thor you can do it?

You can automate tons of stuff. A basic example would just be the volume on your mixer slider. So you can fade in the beat etc..

Cheers guys, I wasn't expecting the definition to be that basic.

I have not even started making tunes with reason, only been messing around with thor. Still need to work out how to record tracks and make sense of the sequencer (though I would rather not use the sequencers if I don't have to).

All I have done is make some tunes in garageband to get a basic grasp of production but it's time to move on now.

I plan to use reason and pro logic express.

I have used panning and volume controls so I guess I have started automating without even realising it.

On a similar subject; My micro-korg won't learn MIDI w/ Reason 4, I can use keys, mod and pitchbend bt none of the knobs. Works in massive and cubase tho.
Whats up with that?

is it sending midi nrpn messages or standard (have a micron not microkorg)
if nrpn it takes some delving on the net or say a device panel in cubase to ease the headache

I seem to be getting on alright with reason.

Figured out redrum (was a bit of a pain), got some decent wobbles on thor (which I automated using record and editing manually). And automated volume on the lead synth.

Also figured out subbass but i found it harder than doing wobbles. Still not got the sound i am looking for.

Got a few bars together. The back of the reason rack looks crazy, I somehow managed to put reverb on the snare and another reverb for the whole redrum pattern. But it seemed to work.

I find that I am getting carried away using the compressor for everything. Is this normal practice? What do you guys use compression on?

I know I am chatting a lot but so much has happened the last couple of days. I think I am addicted to learning all this stuff now.

compression i generally use for gelling a split bass back together or it's intended use
also sidechain for when i want that pumping bass/kickdrum sound
also for you automation geeks you might want to invest in a wacom tablet to draw in your automations all leet like
edit: btw flat eric is the shit

alright guys, well i managed to put something together. It is very basic just a few bars.

I just used reason cause i just wanna learn that first then go on to mixing in logic.

But yeah i am getting some sounds, it's not great cause i still got a lot to learn about mixing and compression etc. And i need monitors big time.

but have a listen please, on myspace. I called it X and prob won't keep it on there.

And please let me know what the big mistakes are (i am sure there are a few)

cheers
